any one tried this

take a kick rear axel and shorten the passenger side down too the zuk short side axel length ....then use the kick axel on the drivers side....d.s. is about 1 and 3/4 inch shorter than the zuk axel.......but i could compensate for this with a spacer or back spaceing on the rim.......

but the important thing is i beleive the kick wheel bearings will fit the zuk axel ie no more wimpy axel bearings.............

so am i smokin crack or does this sound like it will work??????????

If you are going to go through all that, why not cut down a toy axle insted.

well

its what i got laying around and i finaly have lots of time to do stuff like this..............plus ive never done any thing like this and if i screw it up i wont be out any thing of real value....................

it would be nice to do toys but i have not seen any donor trucks in the immediate area.................plus if i go toy my arb,s would be useless to me and i havent got them installed yet.........so i would kinda like to run em too see if i like em........im told im gonna like em............i just hope i get a chance too find out how good they are.................

and if it looks like the axel is too narow for the sammy i think i could make it fit under my sj-410.........

but i have a crushed axel tube in the here and now .........and i wouldnt even begin too know how to lengthen the axel tube on the other side.............

also this would get me better wheel bearings than the stock zuk had and i have plenty of kick axel,s laying around..........

I have seen a shortened kick axle, with Sam shafts on both sides tho'. Seems like you are going to kill the short side, what with the small axle on one side, and unequal twist, etc. Especially with the ARB locked. The result is lighter than Toy, that's one benny. The Kick rear diff is plenty strong, I think. Lots stronger than the axles in it.

But when you snap you kick axle at the splines and it ruins the ARB carrier ... well then they'll really be useless

ok

so what your saying is the zuk axel will snap at the spline......

i havent done that too a rear yet, but i havent been locked up yet either........i was hopeing that being able too run "open" most of the time would put way less stress on the axels than an automatic locker .............on trail rides i would estimate that you need a locker about 5-10% of the time.........so the stress of a locker i was hopeing would be all but eliminated.........turn it on when needed ...then turn it off 30 seconds later when your past the rough spot................

but ive never ran lockers so what do i know..........Q? would any of the cromo axels available be a better choice????????

Rabid, you'd have to use a disc adapter to get a flange that matches on both sides of the axles.

LJ-80 axles shafts are sometimes used to make this type of axle, I don't know exactly how.

Sounds like a lot of work for something sketchy. I haven't looked at kick bearings but will they fit on the sammy axle shafts? Could you just xfer the bearings/tube ends?

well

i mesured the bearing portion of both axel shafts and they appear to be the same diameter so think im good too go as far as the bearings concerned.........

i only have too cut off about 8 mm more of axel tube and it should be the right length.........................

i could also have one of the many kick axels cut and resplined .....

i am also going to do disc brake conversion to get around the different flange size on the two axels.........

as far as d-44,s i have a set and there under a 78 scout.....

the problem with this is they are 3.54 and unless i go deisel i wont use them..............

this for me is kinda my own little junkyard wars comp so it doesnt really matter weather it works or not im just practiceing on junk too see if i can infact do it........it will be cool if it works and if it does not then ive gained some practcal knowledge .........

I hear that the four door rear brakes are bigger? if you have some of those laying around it might make it easyer!

nope

all ive ever pated out have been 2 door models ......

ive kinda given up on this for the moment........just because i have too many qeustions about the dimensional differences between the two platforms........

i want the bigger bearings and thicker houseing that the kick stuff offers.........but i have yet too take into account the fine details of how different this stuff is........
