Nope but I have thought about a VW VR6 2.8. The only problem is the bottom end sux (no torque). Killer top end though...........yeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaa
even thought about the 1.8 turbo. A 3.0 zuk could be fun. What's one of those weigh? It's got to be lighter than a Chev 4.3.

But the 3.0 V6 toyota engine isn't worth swapping in.
1. Only ~20HP more than the 22RE 4-popper, but heavier. 2. They like to blow headgaskets (Toyota has a TSB out on it, they've replaced thousands of them for free, on vehicles out of warranty). 3. Transfer case: 6-poppers had a chain driven t-case, which is WEAKER than the 4-cyl's gear-driven cases. You can't use the V6 case in a dual case setup, nor can you get low-range gearsets for it. You need a $350 adapter to let you bolt up 4-cylinder Tcases, and you also need to buy the t-cases. On the other hand, they put out more torque thanthe 22RE by a wide marign, AFAIK. And the turbo, 23-spline transmission (R151) will bolt up in place of the V6 tranny (R150). So if you had a turbo truck and a V6 truck laying around, you could combine them - but the turbo engine wouldbe my first choice for a toy engine anyway (other than the 3.4V6 Taco mill). |

Try 34 more hp and the HG have probably been done in that 4runner by now. The 3.0 is a good motor. I am doing my hg right now at 214k. You are right about the tcases although I have never seen one break. The best reason not to do the swap is room. With all the intake crap and accesories the V6 is rather bulky. You can sell the motor and buy one that fits better or will give more power. The sideflip motor and the wrangler 2.5 are both a better fit with about twice the power of stock. The 4.3 is of similar size with more power.
Of course you can fit any motor with enough time and $$. DMG [QUOTE]Originally posted by Yota_san [B]But the 3.0 V6 toyota engine isn't worth swapping in. 1. Only ~20HP more than the 22RE 4-popper, but heavier. 2. They like to blow headgaskets [QUOTE][i]

Yeah. 34Hp more than the 22RE. But the 22RE is a proven bulletproof motor, it fits much more easily than the 3.0, with plenty of oomph to push a Zuk, and it comes with one of the two transfer cases you need.
As far as putting a turbo drive train into the zuk, have you priced an R151 tranny and a 23-spline tcase? I could probably get the 22RE, W56, and two tcases for what the Turbo tranny has been going for lately. You can always find one for sale by someone who doesn't now what he has, I suppose, but I wouldn't hold my breath. But re-reading my first post, I did kinda make the 3.0 sound like a total POS... it's not a bad motor, and it's reliable except for the head-gasket thing. I just don't think that I could try and convince someone to put it in a Zuk, when there are better motors that you can end up with, with less work. |

Thanxs for all the info I think the only 3.0 I want to deal with is the one in my daily driver I probably look at the 1.6 or 22re

i just threw 3 3.0l away. they came out of the same truck. warrenty company kept wanting a used motor. 24hr r&i time. the last time it left the shop it had a rebuilt motor and the customer called 4months later and said it had a dead cylinder again. i told him to go to another shop. you can only tighten the same bolts so many times. huge problems with head gaskets and even the heads. the automatic trans for these things is unreal. there is more damn parts in the tranny than the hole truck. they also have problems with the valves, main and rod bearings. kind of a pos if you ask me. 22re is way better. after 180k just pop off the head and t-chain and 5hrs later it's back on the road for another 180k. the only thing i liked on the 3.0 was the main cap/girdle. very good idea but that guy must have been fired because the rest of the motor is crap.

BTW, everyone keeps asking what a 22RE weighs, but no one answers. Two guys finally posted in the Toy board a while back. One had a longblock (I think block, head, manifold, pretty much everything but accessories) on his and including the pallet, it was ~400-425 lbs. shipped to his home.

I just finished mounting a 3L toy v6 motor trans and transfer, toy axles, Yj springs, 33"boggers in my 86 zuk . Every thing fits well , compaired to the 3.8 olds, TH350 I just removed. I have yet to test it, as I am still working on the body and drive shafts.

22RE Fits?
Am I missing something here? Many on this board are saying the 22RE is a better "fit" in a sami? Last time I checked (and I know yota san or incontrol will have to a 1/64th of an inch measurement) the 22RE was a long 25-26" from front to back. The engine bay of a sami is barely longer than that which equates to no room for a decent radiator without extending the front end or cutting the firewall back (which shortens the rear driveline more and most likely eliminates the dual toy case option without and extended wheelbase-- Read what the hell is the point?). Now granted when we looked into the toy motor swap our measurements were very preliminary and done while on an engine hoist with the front clip removed and reinserted (but not bolted up).
So maybe someone who has ACTUALLY DONE THE SWAP can comment on it, to straighten my findings out. I'm not trying to be a prick just trying to let people have the straight facts on engine swaps. Like DMG said, you can make anything work it just depends on how much $$ and time you throw at it. Dave aka Shogunator

I know it has been covered, but the 3.0 is junk. One of my friends used to work in the parts dept at a toyota dealer, and they had like 5 longblock replacements a month. it seems like toy. got their shit together later, though, cause most people like the new v-6's
