Post Sidekick D44 - pics!

Its still work in progress...

I'd heard & seen so many guys turning and cutting-down diff housings that I figured any idiot can do it. Well, now I'm one of those idiots

First I went and grabbed the ugliest of my three spare Chevy D44 housings. (sound familiar?) Then I grabbed the shortest long-side D44 axle shaft I had - in this case, one from an EB44. Its a full 8-1/8" shorter than the GM shaft. Yeah, its kinda skinny, but we're only talking 1600cc's!

Grinding that housing end off sure is a PITA. Here's a pic right after I whacked off the 8-1/8" of axle tube.

And the finished product

Here's how it compares against an EB housing

I did the math and it looks like its going to measure in at 59.5" across the WMS when its done. Then all I gotta do it bolt it into the Sidekick

I haven't quite figured that out yet

If I find I need to turn the pinion up (and cut the other end loose), then both perches will be on the axle tube (i.e. wider). If I don't need to turn it, then I will have the option of using the cast-on perch - so it will be quite narrow.

Suggestions

Nothing new yet... I'm waiting for some YJ front springs The "SideTrack" is still in one piece - haven't started hacking yet. Here's the multi-colored monster:

It started as an econo-beater I assembled out of a wreck. After swapping in what I *thought* was a straight front suspension... turns out its twisted anyway. Looks fine, drives fine, but the frame shop says it needs $500 worth of work before they can certify it.

I know its not out by much, since I swapped the frame as well, and all the body mounts still lined up perfectly.

I'll keep ya'll posted!
