"Roadless Gear Reduction System" (RGRS) series three gears are now ready.
These are the Rockhopper gears Liam makes down in Austrailia.

19% lower high range
170% lower low range (6.129:1)

I'm getting ready to place my first order and need to know how many to buy.

You pay for what you get for.. Grs II 850 4.89 reduction.. Rockhopper Series 3 gears 1050 6.129

Hmmm.... let's see if it's really expensive:

1st x stock lo x 5.13's
3.652 x 2.28 x 5.13 = 42.7:1 CR

1st x GRS I x 5.13's
3.652 x 4.16 x 5.13 = 77.9:1 CR

1st x GRS II x 3.73
3.652 x 4.89 x 3.73 = 66.6:1 CR

1st x RGRS III x stock R&P
3.652 x 6.129 x 3.73 = 83.5:1 CR

...so to hit up there around 80:1, you'd have to have at Least a 4.16 t-case kit at ~$500, plus 2 new R&P gearsets = around $180 each, plus install kits = $125, plus installation. (For ALL-NEW stuff)

Plunk down you $1050 and in a couple of hours you got 83:1 crawl ratio.
between the time saved turning wrenches, and not having to rely on somebody to set gears up, I'd think the RGRS kit is a good deal for what you get. IMHO <IMG SRC="smilies/smokin.gif" border="0">

i think the price is competative.. but didn't they say they x rayd the test gearsets and found hairline cracks starting to form... i believe i heard "back to the drawing board" from them just a few weeks ago... <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0"> are they just rushing these things out anyways? i know i don't want to be a guinea pig at $1000 a pop. also is the $1000 for the full case setup with the gears or is just for the gearset? i paid like $1200 for my complete grs2 case. so $1000 for the complete case would be super dooper... if its not going to break apart.

I talked to Figmo today at Roadless gear, the new gear sets are just the gears...soon he will have complete cases, but for now it is just the gears.....

Think about my set up...
3.652 (first) x 6.129 (rgrs3) x 5.38's
= 120.42:1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or for $2500 you can get the 327:1
Or if you do both you can get 500:1....that is a little crazy there!!!

Last I heard (about 2 months ago) - they had a prototype set in a vehicle and they ran the hell outta it for a while, pulled the gears out and x-rayed them for signs of stress. They noticed some heat cracks in them and went back to the drawing board.

Bad news is - this will delay the release of the product. But the good news is - I think this speaks volumes for the quality of the mfg. Some others may have just said "to hell with it" and sold the gears anyway to start making money. Personally - I'd rather wait and know that what I'm buying has been tested, and then tested again to ensure that they wont grenade on me out in the middle of nowhere.

As soon as I hear more info on this product you can bet I'll be posting it. I just can't call them GR....ooops....I almost said it again

no they aren't the same gears as tested before.. The gears before were 5.67's and they couldn't get the heat treating right and x-rayed cracks in parts of the gears. They tried a few different ratios and gear cutting patterns. They ended up with the 6.129 gear set. They have beat up on these gears in Aussie Competitions and they are holding up.



On top of that they have a 12 month, 20km mileage waranty. that needs to be converted in to US miles but I am too tires for that right now <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

1050... Hmmm... You might be able to find a beater yota for that price, and steal it's drivetrain. Now you have Toy axles, an engine with ~145 lb.ft. of torque, and a tranny & tcase that don't eat their own mounts.

Now go plunk down the money for some 5.29s, and a dual Tcase setup, and your wheeling a SamYota for $~2000. (Dual Toy adapter from AA is about $400 to your door, plus the price for the second case in the junkyard).

Two Stock Toy Cases:
(tranny x tcase x tcase x R&P)
3.95 x 2.28 x 2.28 x 5.29 = 108:1

Add a single AA 4:1 low-range gearset:
3.95 x 2.28 x 4.00 x 5.29 = 190:1

Or a single Marlin Crawler 4.7 gearset:
3.95 x 2.28 x 4.70 x 5.29 = 228:1

Just some more food for thought...

I agree master, a SamYota would be cool, BUT, bear in mind the advantage of the high range reduction of the Sammi transfer cases, with the work to get the same from the Toy goodies, it makes more sense to go RGRS

4.10 to 4.88 is a 19% reduction ~700.00
(Gears and install kit.)
AA or Marlin adapter at about ~400.00
Second case: ~250.00

RGRS, 19% hi and 170% lo. $1050.00

Don't get me wrong, I know what your saying and almost agree, but its a damn good feeling when the Jeep and Toy boys are humbled when they are told its all Sammi running gear. <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

How do you install a Toy tranny and case? Do you have to build crossmembers and mounts and cut out the suzuki stuff?? Do you have to modify the floor and shifter location??? There are a couple of guys building adapters to get a Toy tranny into a Samurai - also to make a Toy t-case "divorced" so you could run doubles (triples <IMG SRC="smilies/grinpimp.gif" border="0"> ) under your rig. Much fabrication required - crossmembers, floor pan, driveshafts.

I was talking about putting the engine in there, too... so that you wouldn't need the high range reduction, or any expensive adapters to throw Toy trnny/Xfers onto the sammy engine.</font>
