Dual Transfer cases

Have samuri with 22r motor and all yota drivetrain.
Was wondering if a dual case with the sami case behind toyota would be a good setup?

Im in need of lower gears .
Have 4.11 in rear and whatevers in stock yota 5 speed. and transfer case.
Any pics or articles out there you could point me to .

there was a buggy type thing running a similar setup at the rubicon clean up. had stickers on it that said shaffers offroad out of carson city on it. you may be able to track it down that way. I didn't get any pics of it though.

I'd say it'd be better to run a dual Toyota Tcase--stronger 'cases, and readily available. The output of the Toy case would get in the way of your front drivline anyway, if you used the Sami case.

how long is the toy engine and trans?

22RE is 24.5" from the crank pulley to the bellhousing.

W56 trans/Tcase assembly is 38.5" from bellhousing to driveline flange.

So the total engine/trans/Tcase is about 63" long.

A second transfercase and adapter adds about 6.5" to the total length. (I anticipated that question. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> )

Edit: All measurements taken from an '88 truck. Some of the earlier (weaker) 4 and 5 speeds were shorter.

Dude, You have unlimited options. That is what is nice about Toyota running gear.
Right now with stock trans first gear is 3.93 the stock transfer case is 2.28 and the ring and pinion is 4.10. That is 36.47:1 crawl ratio. If you didnt want to go to dual cases because of the length. Go with 4.0 gears from AA in the transfer case. That would give yu 64.45:1 or Marlins 4.7 gearset in the t-case would give you 75.73:1.
A $400 dual case adaptor would give you 83.76:1, a set of 4.0 gears in the rear case would give you 146.95:1 (that is where I am and I run 38" tires) You could go as far as Marlins 4.7 gears in both cases and get 355:1.
See what I mean, the possibilities are endless.

I believe I would like to go with the dual cases but I am wondering about the drive shaft length and costs .
There is not much there now as far as drive shaft length. I havent measured it yet . Would I have to use a high pinion axle.

Let you know where Im at financially right now.
Im a graduate student in my final year= poor

I want to get by as cheap as I can .

As far as cost what do you guys recomend for now.

Im gonna put on some 36x12.5 tsl radials and am thinking about going dual cases to make up the size difference . I know I could change axle gears but Id like to keep stock third members because I have 3 spares they are strong and they are easy to find.
Right now Im running 33s ,4.10 gears and 4.71 transfer case gears.

what do you guys think about keeping stock gearing and adding another case?

When I go to 36s Im gonna run a two inch block in the rear and get some lift springs for the front or throw in another leaf.

Will your rear d-shaft work then at that angle? As far as length? I don't remember you haveing much room when I meet ya. No question dual cases kick ass and you will never know how you wheeled with stock gearing. It even makes me look like a decent driver

Oh I think Im gonna move my axle back about 5 inches and that will give me plenty of room. Guess Ill have to get some blades for the sawzall.

Well I telly aheres what I got in the works dual sami t-cases with 4:16 in both 5:71 r/p can you say super fawkin low that shit will crawl or break real hard only time will tell 360.87.1

Not building a Zuk persay, but thinking of finding a body and making it work on my 4Runner frame I gotta try harder to fit in here in MO I'm everywhere....I'm Batman

what have you guys seen that you think works and looks the best for extending out the back of a zuk?

I have some stock yota leafsprings and was thinking of just throwing them on to move it all back and just extending the frame.

Do yota springs flex worth a crap??

Dual Zuk cases are like a circus show freak. Yes they work, but they are damn ugly and have too many downsides. One of the local guys tried fabbing up a dual case setup. It was just too kludgy to trust.

When I ran with Dave Parker down at zooki melt he was running the setup and did a pretty nice job that thing went everywhere it was point and shoot, so Ill take my chances.

Did Parker ever make it so everything wasnt hanging down? The pics I saw on ORC where ugly! One of the tcs was 4-5 inches below the frame.

T-case hangs down, oiling problems in the first t-case (one guy on ORC claimed it was cheap enough to rebuild the cases ), oil spilling from the first case, no way to drive fast any more thanks to the compounded hi-range reduction and I have yet to see a mounting scheme that didn't look hacked together. If your happy with this why waste the money on a YJ/coil suspension, just slap some 12" shackles on there and call it good.

Im currently running 1 yota case with the 5.71 gears and everything is flush with the bottom of the frame and covered with a full belly pan. I want to keep it like that. I dont forsee any way it would hang down.

Im gonna be using dual yota cases not the sammi case.
That sammi case would hang way down and really be a drag. (no pun intended)
