There were a couple of rigs at SOR running Shafers kit and it was very clean and flexed well. Samit on this bbs gave us the tour. I thought one of the sweetest things was how easy and cheap it was to tweek lift and spring rate, since it uses off the shelf coils that are 25-35 a corner. All new springs for just over a $100...nice. Approach was also excellent.

I used cheap QA1 coils from jegs...12" 150lb worked, but were deformed (lengthwise) after some use...just switched to 170lb. I think the problem is the the coil OD and wire gauge...

I used stock TJ coils. They are in the 150 range also. They lasted 2 years, and have just replaced them. 170 rate would be better, as they are a little too soft. This was up front, guess you could use TJ front coils for the rear, and get some 170's for the front. At least its a cheap solution. As long as you know a bunch of Jeep people....LOL. What link system are you thinking?

I can't say right now, if I go ahead with the project it will be Top-secrete. I will say were thinking of making a new middle sub-frame like the RE Long Arm kit for the TJ's.

I use 3" lifted procomp xj coils in the rear with a 4 link setup .Crazy flex <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">

Hmmmmmmm...
Finally someone on this board got some sense, realising that leaves are for trees! Fatkid, we'll be posting some pics wednesday or thursday of J's new set up. He's using 19" coils (not sure of the spring rate)in a three link set up with a panhard bar. When he used 12"ers before it flexed like crazy. The new set up will be sick. Let you know.

I would need a v-8 to power the Tin Bender Blender, I will say this though. I just got a 3500 watt gen for my 5th wheel so I can use a microwave.

its pretty complicated, read up on fourbar linkages,instant center,squat+antisquat,roll center and chassis design. the torque of the axle under power will drive the lower arms forward+upward to the frame. its not really the length, but the angle they make make with the upper arm. draw an imaginary line from both upper and lower arms going forward...the further out in front of the rig and lower the intersection, the better off you will be (for wheeling, not dragracing)

ZukMike, I am an old drag racer from Way back - I can set up a 4-link on a drag car, using the same theories you described, but I have a hard time believing the same principals apply to a rock-crawling rig. For instance: from the facory, the TJ upper & lower arms are practically the same length - this is so they will move in a tandem arc to keep the pinion angle good. When you increase the length of the lower arm, this throws the pinion towards the ground at max articulation. I suppose the models I have been using represent unrealistic flex... but hey - dream big, right? <IMG SRC="smilies/grinpimp.gif" border="0">

good stuff on the arc! yes, the pinion will move down, but the longer the arms are, the less it will move for a given travel distance. as for the tj...the jeep eng's werent looking for monster travel, but a mix of good road manners and offroad ability...if you look at the "real" 4x4 companies, they are increasing the length of the arms and improving the instant center for tj lifts, while the cheap ones use the stock mounts...can you say <IMG SRC="smilies/jeep1.gif" border="0"> they are actually providing antisquat...which you dont want when you are on top of a rock...
and whats this about unrealistic flex <IMG SRC="smilies/question.gif" border="0">

ill get you my arm lengths if you want them.

Well after reading all of this I have a question for you two. On my rig the upper and lower arms are in up front It's sitting on 14in coils and it is setup very much like the picture ZukMike posted. Well What about a pan hard bar any theories on that this Is were I'm stumped I know that it should mount on the inside of the frame on the drivers side and to the out side of the pumpkin on that pass side but were and how do I know exactly were to mount it so it will work well and not hurt my travel?

Have any of you had the chance to look at RE long arm kit for the TJ? I had the chance to do some work for a guy and he has that on his Jeep. It works well, his springs are a little soft but it get's it. Anyway the kit has some nice features, If we can lay it out that'll be the direction I'll go. However I have to find the right springs, what's out there? <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

the panhard is hidden behind the drag link...
the top end mounts to the frame, bottom to the axle. wont hurt travel.

Approximately how much travel at the center section of the housing do most multiple-link kits give you? I see Spidertrax's 1/4 Ellipt. kit comes with a Limiting Strap <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> that appears to be ~12-14" long.

So the panhard on you set up mounts in front of the coil spring on the axle and it looks like on the outside of the frame. Thanks for explaning to some one that just don't get it.

[I AM USING VW RABBIT REAR COILS. THEY ARE 14" LONG AND REAL SOFT. THEY SEEM TO BE PERFECT BUT I AINT GOT IT GOIN YET SO I CAN'T SAY FOR SURE. THAY SURE ARE SOFT THOUGH.
