Hey Zuki guys? I was wondering what you guys thought of a Jeep guy turning into a Zuki guy? I have been pondering selling the Heep and buying a truck and using the left over money to build a zuki. My buddy has 4 and I can get one for $1500, it runs great and is practically rust free. I think its an 89, with fairly low mileage. I could get a Ram 1500 and tow the sami with it. It would be a total trail rig. So how much cash would I have to throw into one to get it ready for the hard trails? Here is what i was thinking:
SOA with YJ springs, (i have a spare set) Lots of sawzall work and some 33x12.5 TSL's D44's, 5.38's, lock rites, and a 4:1 Tcase? I would keep my winch and maybe even my 33's off my YJ. Any thoughts or opinions? |

Its a jeep thing........What I don't understand is why they spend so much money to keep up with Zuks and Toys <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0">

You shouldn't need to pull out the sawzall much at all (if you even need to). I ended up with about 9 inches of lift with the YJ's and spring over. I'm running 31x10.5 TSL's and do not rub at all. Depending how far forward you move the front axle will say whether or not you will rub the back of the wheelwell.

You wont have any problems at all with stock YJ's on 33's!!! No rubbage at all!!!!

Hell yeah guys, This is SOOO tempting, I just hav to sell the idea to the g/f, she has bought tons of parts for the Heep and will probably get pissed when i sell it <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> Oh well!

as a current '89 yj owner i say don't do it as the yj is the best w/ a slapped in 302efi, c4 auto and a rear dana 44....the problem w/ the sammys is they dont get stuck like a jeep!
anyone want to trade a sammy for the above yj... |

Well i am 85% sure i am going to do this. Keep looking at the after market and WOW. I think i may just keep the heep drop in a v8 tak the lift off and tow the sammi with it. Any of you guys towed a Zuki with a heep before? Trailer or Flat? How do they do?

It actually does pretty well. I can easily go 65mph on the highway. Up hills I do have to drop it down a gear. Before when I was running a 4 leaf YJ pack in the back I would get fishtailing from the zuk at around 60-65 a lot. At 55mph it was fine. Now with the 5 leaf pack I don't get fishtailing at all.

i traded a mitsubishi pickup truck for mine, its great. its also got quite a bit of problems, so i can only imagine what you can do with one of these if you have the money

i cant believe you are even saying this, i use to have a sammy, with 3 inch trailmasters soa, 5.13's; 35 bogs and i had nothing but trouble with that thing, one of the smartest things i ever did was sell my zuk to a hunting club, and buy my YJ, this is my first time on the zuk board and i am very dissapointed to see a trader in our mist
i see you guys are talking about using yj parts, you will never here of a so called "heep" running sammy parts, i hope this was enough to change your mind about ditching the YJ

lengthen it to 97 to 100" wheelbase, go with 5.89's in the d44's and get a 6to1 sumo case. get it from the begining because you'll want to move up to 36's, 37's, or even 38's (i think a set of 38x12.sx's on a set of waggy 44's would be sweet!) and your choice of gearing will not be low enough. a buddy of mine is runnin waggy d44's with 5.38's and a 4to1 and it was not near low enough with 36 sx's. he sold the 4to1 and is waiting on his sumo 6 to 1 case. i say all this to say do itr right the firsat time. you' save $$$ in the longrun if you do. just my op.

I got a friend in my group that has a TJ that he uses to pull his zuk. He puts the zuk on a tow dolly and it seems to pull ok doing 70mph on the highway. It's not the best scenario(sp?) but it'll work.

Here's the low down guys. I am putting the D44's with 5.38's under the YJ with a SOA and 36's. I am going to wheel it all summer and start building zuki next fall.
AS i see it now, it will have D44's with 5.38's, 35-37" tires, either a 6:1 or possibly toy boxes. Most likley a 1.6L and an extended wheelbase. Flat bed style and lots of tube work. That way on closer trips in the state i can drive the jeep and for the more difficult trails and longer trips I can tow the zuki. I have been riding with my buddy in his zuki a lot, I AM DEFINATELY HOOKED. We flopped it over on a water fall a couple of weeks ago, it was a blast. He is getting ready to extend his wheelbase and move up to 35's. His 6:1 should be here in a week or two. |
