Toyota P/S problems

Well i got a whole toyota set up pump, box and lines. Get it all home the pump dosen't work because it mounts on the passanger side. . So we put a saginaw pump on and run it to the Toy IFS box. It turns from lock to lock on the jack stands but on the ground it turns left all the way to lock but when turning right it goes about 1/4th.

If i could freaking figure out how do get the power steering going i could be wheeling.

Any ideas of whats happening.

Sounds like your pitman is not mounted in the correct position on the output shaft.

Is the system bled completely? Turning with a spool is work. My system will bind up with the front arb engaged on pavement if there is any air in the system. Put the front end up on jack stands, turn the wheel lock-to-lock a dozen times or so and have someone watch the reservoir and see if there is any air burping up.

Before I put the pitman arm on I ran the steering from lock to lock, and it took 4 1/2 turns so I turned it back 2 1/4, then put the pitman arm on as straight as I could.

I think this is the problem I did run it back, and forth a couple times but not a lot. The pump made quit alot of noise also. I'll have to give it a shot tomorrow.

My IFS system primed fairly easily, but not my FJ system. I think it is becasue of the cooler I am running, but I had to spend about three hours alternating between the raised front end method and driving it around.

FYI: In case you didn't know, you need to have the engine OFF when raising the front end and cycling the steering. This uses steering box as the pump and runs the fluid backwards. Works well in getting pesky trapped air out that conventional methods won't get. Good luck.

I didn't know that thanks.

Another question. Will I be alright using the saginaw pump or would a toyota pump do just as good???

The saginaw take alot of room, and it's harder for the engine to run.
