1995 Tracker idling too low

What would be some typical causes for this problem? It is in my daughter's stock tracker & sheis going for her driver's lecense test tomorrow in it. The thing is idling around 500 RPMs so sometimes when you stop at a stop sign it stalls or when you take off again the belt squeals because it was idling so low. I tried advancing the timeing & the RPMs came up to 650 or so but I don't know if I should leave it since I would assume the timing was all set. It has done it ever since we bought it a month ago. I tried changing the plugs, plug wires, dist. cap, & rotor button. None of that stuff helped. No I don't have scan tool or a timing light.

Try playing with this. It's an idle adjustment screw.

it's also possible that whoever owned it before had to screw with the timing for some reason and the distibutor may be put in a tooth retarded. you better check the timing.

thank you for this thread.
i have been fighting low idle at operating temp problems the whole time i have had my 16v. i have been pulling the whole intake tube off the throttle body and adjusting the set screw that stops the butterfly valve. the bad thing is, you cant adjust it with the engine running, so its like; disassemble, adjust, reassemble, start engine, dammit its still too low, disassemble, adjust, and on and on.
i knew there had to be a better way. the screw mentioned above is much easier to get to, and it solved my problem. i just wonder why the assholes hid it under that little rubber plug. i never saw it before reading this thread. thanks again, -marty
