Shift Lever Lock Collar

How in the heck do you get that thing to turn?? I pulled my shift lever out of my T-case so i could put it back under my Sami, i can get the collar pressed down against the spring, but cannot get it to spin to lock into place. I have tried two screwdrivers, needle nose pliers (how i got it out, with the t-case on my work bench), lock ring pliers, and using my fingers, I cannot get it to spin!! Is there some tool or trick that you guys use to make the collar spin?

yeah, it's a bitch. I just learned to lay under the truck with feet towards the rear axle, and reach up with 2 fingers of each hand around the thing and pull downward and turn. just make sure you turn the right way, not the wrong way. you can get close by reaching down through the top, but it's always been easier to do it from underneath by hand.
good luck.

I was just going to suggest the same thing. I started out doing the old 2 screwdriver trick, the first few times. Then I read about doing from underneath like css suggested, made it a lot easier and faster to do.

Yeah i have tried it by laying underneath, i can reach it fine, but cannot get it too turn. I swear i'm not a little pansie either, i cannot get it to budge.

How bad would it be to run it without the spring underneath? I tried to set it without the spring and it went relatively easy, so i know i'm spinning the right way, just cant get it to go with the spring in there??

I would not advise running without the spring.
You may be pushing too hard on it, when trying to put it in. IIRC, just push it down "firm" not hard, then try and twist it into place. Pushing too hard on it can bind it up. Once you get the feel down for it, it will be easier next time.

Oh, and make sure you are pushing down evenly on both sides. If you push down one side more than the other, that will make it bind too.

What is the spring for? When i put the collar on without it, i was not able to pull the shifter out without removing the collar first. I'm not going to run it without the spring, just wondering what it does?

it's too hold everything tight so it don't rattle. is everything clean with no grit or rust binding it up? hate to hear that you're having problems with it. perhaps the spring flexes INTO the way and binds you up good??

Bill I thought of building something like that and people said it's easy by hand. At my age I'd like that tool. Seen any more on e-bay or should someone start building some. I know I'd use it. Never crawl under a Sami again to do the sheet thing.

The tool looks like someone had a good idea and built one for themself. Then realized they could make some money on ebay so they sold a few more. I haven't seen them on ebay for about two years...
So Okie - build some and see how they sell... I'll bet you won't be able to keep them in stock.
I stuck the pix on my personal site, so you can hit them there at:

How ya going to get the ring and boot off? Maybe your hands and arms are small and flexible enough to reach through the hole from the top...mine aren't.
