If you were doing occasional rocks, mostly steet and snow, Id say go for it.
I have those General Grabber ATs on my DD and tow rig. 235s 15 and 16 in rims.

Quiet on the road and good in snow.
They suck in mud.

Search the net or call around locally for tire shops or off-road stores that sell swampers.

http://www.tyres1.com/browse/browseT.html

This is one place that has 29" swamper TSL's for 84 bucks each. If you run rocks and mud there is really no other choice if you don't mind a little noise. Otherwise call some parts places like pep-boys and local tire shops for their generic mud terrains. In a 29-30 inch size even walmart has some avail for under or right at 100 bucks.

Peerless tyre has some
Discount tire has em
Walmart has some
etc..........

Well your looking at the General Grabber. What about the Mud Grabber, or whatever it is, my friend has them on his ranger, and they work pretty good for something thats not a swamper, up here in the PNW. They might be selling the Mud Grabber, for a small price if the General Grabber is too.

29 x 10.50 x 15 TSL SX I bought 4 brand new from a local shop for $100 a tire. They rode good and did awsome offroad. I also had them on a 10" wheel, and stock sammy.

i think these are a great tire i ran them for about 8 yrs in my rig but in 35 and 37,s they are a tough tire that are street friendly and off road performing
i would get a price from 4wd wholesalers and get a lifetime warantee for about $20 a tire no q,s asked exchange for a new one
my daughter has 35,s in her k5 and she beats on them without any problems

I would save up a bit more money and get some Maxxis Buckshots I loved mine in the mud and they were very decent on the rocks.

http://high-tec-retreading.com

You will probably here some negative things once others see that link but they probably have never even run retreads from high-tec.

I have had really good luck with high-tec retreads and will buy them in the future.

Also you can ask for a certain carcass. The Goodyear wranger carcasses I got have held up really well. I don't do allot of highway driving it's mostly a trail rig.
Rocks and tree roots have yet to puncture a sidewall on me.

I would go with the swamper ltb's (( cheap and good...)) Or the bfg's...
(( cheap and really good.))

P.S. there is a reason that light duty retread's are illegal in most states...they tend to explode on light duty carcasses..... Please dont go that route if you plan on driving on the same roads as anyone in my family....

I missed the gearing and clutch questions.... They will work for the most part. But yes, you should look into getting deaper gears and that will help with frying the clutch... Also look at lowering the trans case gears so you dont lose as much on road performance... 5.29's and 30 inch tires will get ya about 35 miles an hour at 4,000 rpm's.... (( not real numbers, but probably close...))
