Samaruki - Buildup

Well, where to start...my brother in law picked up a 87 Samurai that was missing the rear half for a few bills. It had a cheapo shackle lift and some larger (relatively speaking) tires. So after wheeling it hard enough to blow out the clutch it is now time to build her up.

Pics of when he first bought it:

So...with the blown clutch it got tossed into the shop and the front end got torn out:

The plan is to tube out the front. The front was lengthened just enough to squeeze in a winch. A stinger will be added when I get to the tube bending phase. Something about 20 and 30 degree weather that just doesn't make me want to go out and bend tube...

Pic of the outside brace. Some brace will be done to the inside as well but we have to figure out if it is gonna go full hydro or a toy box.

Next was to toss out the rear and extend the frame:

It is about 8" longer than stock. He wants to add a small rear seat and of course enough room for a small cooler Pic of the braces:

Weld closeup shot, not bad for a 22 year old biomedical engineer:

There are a set of Toy axles sitting outside the shop ready to be gone through and cleaned up. Also a set of YJ leaf springs will be used to give the desired lift. No fancy bling bling coilovers, just good old cheap and easy to fix parts. Did I mention cheap??? The whole build shouldn't go over 1.5k. A cage will be build once everything gets setup. Thinking a front exo tied into a rear interior cage, but that is still to be decided.

Gearing will stay stock in the Diffs, just a welded rear. When money allows the Tcase will get deeper gears. Plan is to get some 35s. Motor will stay stock. Probably gonna spring for a centerforce clutch. I have a lead on a nice steering orbital so it looks like we're gonna go full hydro. Besides for that it's not gonna be too special.

Oh, almost forgot. The floorboards have seen better days and my b-in-law got some free lexan from work, so it's gonna get some see through floorboards

Thanks for all the kind words guys.

Didn't get to much done today, had to run out and get the acetylene tank filled to torch out the old bushings on the YJ springs.

MMMMM...the smell of burning rubber

And painted:

Waiting on new bushings, so this will give me sometime to start on the axles. The rear needs to get cleaned up, inspected, welded, reassembled and painted. For now we are gonna stay drum brakes. The front will need the same minus getting welded. A lockright will get tossed in down the road. Then I can get onto getting these fuckers hung!
