Carb guys, put on your thinking caps

My 87 sami, starts great, then after about 5-10 seconds of running it starts coughing a bit. Then slowly gets it out, and comes up to good high idle. This can be helped by me hitting the gas a few times. Then after high idle, until its fully warmed it runs at either 200 or 500 rpms. On some mornings in will die on me while I am waiting for it to to get nice and toasty(for a soft top) which take quite some time running a such a low rpm. WHen it get to "normal" operating temps it come up to a nice 9-1000 rpms. Now I have a good knowledge of the hitachi's, and I have been in and out of all the major components on it. I have a fsm and everything seem to fit pretty well with the good book. Does any one have any sugestions on what I can do to keep the idle up while its warming up....and during high idle, what should it be running? 1500-1750-2000 sound about right? Thanks guys -Cody

hey, good quistion. I have an 87 sammy and when its cold i have to sit in it for 1-2 minutes reving her up untill she is ready to run on her own as well, if i dont she will die. I took it to shop and they had very little to offer me for my $55 shop rate. Had no real answer just more quistions. So i hope you find an answer, and I will keep reading your quote to see if mine can be helped as well.. Thank you, Will

Maybe check out a block heater for it... I dont have any really good input for ya... But I have a dodge with a carb.. and it used to do this same thing... It doesnt get that cold around here, but I plug the damn thing in anyways... Since I did the block heater, it is trouble free and warms up to full temp in about 3 minutes. Probably not what ya want to hear, but it may be worth your time. Mine was cheap... I think like $40.00... Easy to pute in also. Hope that helps.

I think I may have figured it. Richen it up. My idle mixture screw pin has been out now for a while. Dec 05 I redid my engine. trying to get my old engine running good I started to mess with everything. I havent adjusted the idle screw since then. If you have taken out the pin I would say back off the screw a good full turn. I am writing this and just waiting for some flack on messing with the screw at all, but have been told by a very good mechanic that the screw it called a IDLE mixture screw for a reason. It doesnt affect how it does on the road. And breathe. Anyway I will see how that does. Best of luck and thanks.

AS for back in the 80's, the vacuum line to the choke piston has a check valve, I took mine out and barely get any coughing now. Just a thought.
