rear axle problem
The other day i was driving the old sammi down the highway and noticed a vibration coming from the rear at about 55 then around 60 it stopped. The axle is stock and the tires were put on just before winter and balanced and what not. So after i get home i park the sammi and put it in first and twist the drive shaft with my hand and it seems like it turns a bit before it engages at the diff.. wtf is goin on? is my rear end shot? i guess i was kinda hard on her last winter with all the sweet snow drifting and clutch kicking but does anyone got any ideas?

Ok, need more info. Do you have a locker? Changed gears in either t-case or rear end? Is it all stock? Have a lift? Yada Yada....
There should be some movement when you turn the driveshaft by hand. Thats called backlash. You can get close to a quater rotation of driveshaft under normal conditions. If you have a rear locker, you can get a lot more as there is a lot of stuff that has to mesh together in there. Put the tranny in neutral, t-case in neutral and put parking brake on to try this. check you drive shafts for slop in the u-joints or in the slip yolk. Don't forget to check the intermidiate shaft too. If anything is loose, replace it. The pinion nut. Careful there on tighting it. These rear ends have crush sleeves in them to put the proper pre-load on the pinion. You can just tighten it, but only if you know how to tell how the pinion should "feel" to get the proper pre-load. Not the prefered method, but will work till you get a new crush sleeve. Check the wheel bearings, the rears if thats where your vib is from. Might as well check the fronts while your at it. Just jack up and grab wheel. Shake to see if there is play. Ummm...... Thats all I can think to try first.

Also check the bolts/nuts that holt the drum to the shaft. I've seen these loosen over time, and wallow out the hole and get loose and clunky like you mention.
