Question 1.6 won't fit!?!?!

Hey all, im new to this forum and i am in need of some help. I just got my 1.6L 8v lowered into my 87 samurai and things just arent lining up. I am using the rocky road swap kit and have read and reread the directions. the engine is bolted up to the tranny but for some reason the MOTOR MOUNTS WONT MATCH UP!! i have no idea what to do.. also, there is not a chance in hell the hood is going to close. any suggestions??

thanks a lot for your help

Not sure on the mounts but you have to raise the front body mounts an inch (spacer) or so I,am told

Welcome to the forum new guy. I have a 1.6 16v in the wifes sammy and it fits with no body lift. It also has plenty of clearance under the hood. Could you have the motor mounts switched sides? They are different from right to left on my petroworks kit.

Loosen the mounts and spin them around like an eccentric to aid yourself in the line up process.

well i have a 6" lift so i wouldnt think that clearance would be a problem. as for the motor mounts being flipped with the diff sides, i have checked and rechecked my directions and i have the proper offset castings in the right spots. im completely stumped.

Your 6" lift has nothing to do with the clearance for your hood, unless you have a 6" body lift that is, which I hope you don't. If you can't figure out how that motor goes in, post some pic's or you can send it to me and I will get it to fit in my rig.

Hey, fellow newbie here with the same project. I have an '86 with a 1.6, stock 1.3 tranny with the same adaptor plate and motor mounts. I've had big block Chevies give me less trouble but it can be done.

Get the engine bolted up to the bell housing and you have enough wiggle room (1/4"?) to slide the mounts in and out between the motor and crossmember. Identify the mounts with a 1 & 2 , A & B, whatever works for you. It CAN be done, identifying them makes it less frustrating because you only do it five times and not fifteen.

Loosen the bolts holding the mounts to the block also, this helps wiggle in other directions.

Are you using the 1.3 or the 1.6 mounts?

mines got a big hole cut in the hood, and a piece bent up around it to raise it about the 1" it needed

Easies thing to do is to change the motor mounts to the dodge style.

The Dodge 319 motor mounts are super beef compared to the stock samurai ones and they are CHEAP (less than 10 each).
You'll need to drill the mouting holes out to 1/2" and shimmy the engine in there. A pry bar is needed to jiggle the mounts into position.

The dodge mounts lower the engine by about 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch. I've got a 16v with NO body mount mods, lots of hood room

What the hell?? I've done a lot of 1.3 to 1.6 swaps and have never ran into hood problems. But, that's probably because it is Trail tough stuff...

Yeah? second the what the hell!!!!!!! My petroworks kit makes the engine clear the hood with at least an inch to spare. With no body lift or mod OF ANY TYPE. More reason for me to stay away from RR!

mine is because i have the petro injection 8 valve intake tube running ontop of the motor is why mine doesnt clear, and mine isnt RR..............
of coruse my hood also looks like the fat bitch tapped danced onit till she died with the amount of backflips, endos and trees it has eaten. the one roll that flattened the front part of the hood down acually pushed the radiator fill tube 1/2" down into the tank.....

Yeah, get creative; the kit says right in it that you need a 1" body lift. I'm opting for a cowl induction type hood scoop. Got MIG?

Cut the underside hood brace out...stand back...slam the hood.

It'll close...trust me...I know.

I used a 1.6 8v from a '93 and the 2wd tranny with it. 318 mounts and plenty of space under the hood.

I cut the brace out of my hood too. The part that goes from the throttle body to the air filter is taller on the earlier 1.6 8valve engines, so that adds to the problem if you have that style.

Do yourself a favor.
Splurge the $3.00 to $5.00 per dodge 318 motor mount. A total of maybe $10.00 and your hood will shut just right without mods. I think the mounts came from a 70's dodge BTW

I would rather buy new mounts than try and dick with fabbing a new hood any day. Not only does it drop the engine down 1" or more, keeps the center of gravity lower.

It doesn't lower the engine a lot but I've been in spots where the drive train being 1" lower would have kept me from having a friend push on my samurai to keep it from tipping over while I drove out of a tough spot
