Any zuks with 1.6 running 39" tires?
I'm curious to know if there are any zuks out there with a 1.6L running 39" tires and how is it working out? I've got 5.38 gears in my diffs and 6.1 gears in my Tcase and currently running 36" tires and am considering going up to 39" but not sure if these little 1.6 bangers can turn em that good. I've got Dana 44's so I think those could handle a 39" tire with the zuk being so light. Advice???

Just don't run 39" Irok's. Not sure what it is about them but everyone that I know that has run them on a lightweight rig hates them. They just don't seem to flex well nor do they seem to hook up good. The 42" Irok's are the opposite with tall and squared off profile (vs balloon style like the 39's), soft lugs and great sidewall flex
With an 8:1 gearset and 5.29's in the diffs I had agear for just about everything, just don't expect to win any races ![]() Edit: If you are set on 39" Irok's there is a set on Phoenix Craigslist for $500, at least that way you aren't out much money when you turn around and try to sell them in a month......

I will have to disagree with AZrockcrawler, I am running 39.5" IROKS and I love them. I am on my second set. I use to run a 1.3 and with the right gearing you will be fine. I have 8:1's and 5.13's. I been on a 1.6 16V for a year now.
![]() My two buds are also on 39's and like them as well.

The 39.5 TSLs for a 17" rim worked very good on Jack's rig but they were very short for their advertised size. Pretty sure I had read somewhere they were made with the softer Irok compound.
For those running 39" Irok's and liking them, did you do anything special to break in the sidewalls? With the 42's there was no break in required, they flexed like mad from day one. One of the guys in the club put a set of the 39's on his Toyota based buggy and they didn't even bulge with no valve core in them. I am also pretty sure I know the guy who's selling the 39's on Craigslist, he bitched about those things from day one despite us telling him to get the 42's FWIW the 42's measured right at 40" tall at 5psi....

I will say this the older the tire gets the better it works or hugs a rock. The only thing we did was groove them from the start. Maybe we get more heat here in Texas then Arizona?

my first trip out with the 39 iroks sucked... they wouldn't grip worth of shit, was gettin' denied on stuff I climbed with 37 MTR's
Then when aired down to almost 0, I popped a bead, parked the rig and wanted to sell them to the next guy who said "hey, nice rubber"![]() They've gotten a little better since, but I think they have another season to go before they fully break in. After reading TX's reply, there's still hope ![]() If you're not doubling up your cases (or find a set of 8.1's), you're going to hate the gearing with 40's especially coming off a set of 36's. The engine isn't a problem, but there just isn't enough gear like there is with 36-37" tire. first trip out

If you grooved them that would let the carcass flex more. Nobody I know that has run the 39's has taken the groover to brand their new tires so that could be the key. As for heat, we do most of our wheeling in the fall/winter/spring so you may run them in hotter weather more often. We still put in an occasional triple digit summer night run......

love my 39.5 iroks except I'm ripping the lugs off and cutting the sidewalls.
For breaking them in, I ran them with enough air to keep the rims off the ground. first few laps around the neighborhood I carry a compressor because they'll drop fast. After a few miles I'll take them up to 2lbs of air and run 40mph down the road. About 5 miles of that and these tires flex very nice. This picture is with 2.5lbs. Check out the driver rear. I had to bump up to 4lbs to stop the tires from wrapping then hopping. Yes, I made the climb. Last edited by 2slo4u; 07-26-2009 at 04:52 PM. |

I browsed a bit and I think the TSL/SX and IROKS are the best buy for the money. Both of them are much less then other tires of that size. I think I would like to get the TSL/SX 38x12.50-15LT but can I put this on a 15x8? I have in mind the 15x8 High Impact Bead Locks and just wanted to make sure before I order this stuff that these tires will fit on those rims. Anybody know???????
I also know somebody who will groove the tires for me. |

Here are a couple pics of TruckTraders old buggy. Was a 16v, auto, dual cases. Full hydro steering. We ran this up everything and never babied the skinny pedal. I even put it on the lid at TDS and never had a problem with the yota axles holding up to the abuse.

I'm running a set of 39.5x16 on a 16x10 rim with a beadlock, and love the performance of the iroks(hate the looks of them)Started out running 2psi for the first 6 month, now i"m up to 4psi.I took the groving iron to mine a cut the center lugs in half. They seem to stick like crazy.Buy far the best rock and snow tire out there!!!I can even make the sidewalls wrinkle up like a drag slick.
running them on a zuk.buggy 1.6 auto dual cases(Stock tracker married to a dana 300)toy axle with 5.71s 2400lbs Last edited by ruefab; 01-30-2008 at 03:36 PM. |
