T-Case Question

i have a stock sami 2wd transfer case. i was wondering if you could make it a 4wd t case by taking the tail shaft off and changing the innards. (i have a 4wd t case but the previous owner broke 6 bolts off inside it and my sami came with another t case (the 2wd one).

so the main question is. is there any difference between the 2wd and 4wd t case other than the shaft that goes to the front axle?

you could always tear into it and find out... and let the board know what you've learned.

yeah, 2wd sami's are a rarity. Most of the ones that people find, they convert to 4WD. You may be able to find a collector that will buy that T-case for more than the cost of a new, complete 4wd T-case. Look for a buyer before you go and tear it open and reconfigure it.

how much?

I've seen pics of the 2wd t-case, from what I remember they just lack (on exterior appearance) the front nose for the 4wd, and have instead a plate that covers it.

I've got one of those uber rare 2wd transfer cases. If anyone feels like paying me for it, by all means, PM me

I certainly am not going to tear it apart to see what is inside so that you could convert it to a 4wd tcase. You may as well just install a 4wd tcase, they only made about a zillion of them...

If your turds got better gas mileage, and could flat tow behind an RV without the need for a drive shaft disconnect, you might be able to find a buyer. There are people out there that use the sami for a towed secondary ride for bumping around town or on mild trails that don't need or use 4wd. For them it would be just a big hassel. 2wd T-cases are less expensive, and more economical for someone like that. Just cause you have no use for it doesn't meen some excentric weirdo doesn' want it.

The 2wd output shaft is different and I believe the center gear cluster is different as well.
A 2wd tcase housing is the same as a 4wd, so it can be made into a 4wd tcase by changing the internal pieces that are different and adding the shift rod assemblies, shift rod/shifter housing and the shift lever.

Question Update

during my adventure i realized my t case is missing one of the ball bearings that go in the hole to put pressure against your shift fork. (not the large on that goes in the 4wd switch) there should be a total of 3 small ball bearings correct? one in the bottom with a spring. one in the middle between the two shift forks and one in the top with a spring. if anyone has one of these that would be great. if not if anyone knows where i can find them or the diameter of it (i really dont want to have to tear apart my t case to measure one.

i found that low range sells the larger one that goes in the 4wd switch dent ball but i need the smaller one.

pm me if you have any info i would very much appreciate it.

If it is the center detent ball that has been removed, it is because that allows you to access 2wd low by using an alternate shift pattern.
If it is one of the other detent balls that has been removed, just use the 2 you have for the outer ones and leave the center one out, that way you can access 2wd low.
There are a lot of people out there that have left the center detent ball out of the tcase (myself included), in order to have the 2wd low option and it doesn't affect the shifters staying in place (in my experience).

Then you can get the "Evil Twins" Dual Tcase levers.

But if you need a 4 wheel drive Tcase, mine is for sale. http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,90272.0.html

Oh I dunno..............about 700

Actually, Im putting in full yota power & Drive-train So I have no use for the zuke stuff. However if you email Drake at www.tdoffroad.com and see if a stock Tcase would be useful to him....he may work out a deal with you. Cause thats were it is at. Im trading it to him for some labor, But he needs the cash more...
