I need a VSS and some advice.

I installed a 90 EFI into my 88.5 Sammy with a 1.3. I thought the 88.5 had the VSS in it, but it doesn't. I understand that there are two different styles of VSS, which one do I need?

I have the entire EFI wiring harness and it plugged directly into the 88.5 dash cluster. It wasn't until it flashed the VSS code that I figured out it was missing. Is the VSS a plug and play for the 88.5? Most importantly, where can I get one?

I realize that I can run without the VSS, but it is running very rich, especially at start up. I can't get the idle below 1000, even with adjusting the idle screw. I would prefer not to mess with the wax pellet, and I need to be below 800 rpms to pass emissions in a month.

Thanks for any advice!!

I don't think the VSS have anything to do with those problems. As when it stands still the VSS sends no signal. It sends pulses when you are moving, the faster you move the faster the pulses.

For a bolt on deal you need the metal one, I think these are common in the trackick. But a plastic version will work as well, but it takes a bit of filing of the plastic to get it to work. you can find those in most suzuki cars with FI

I have adjusted the fuel air mixture screw. It is leaned out as much as I can. The cam is new along with rockers, timing belt, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, air temp sensor, headgasket and any other parts I've forgotten. I had a burned valve so I had the entire head redone. The engine has 65 k original miles. The PO used it behind a motor home only.

It is an 88.5 with a 90 EFI and complete wiring harness.

The only code I get is VSS. I have searched for VSS and I can figure out how to mount the VSS, but I am not having luck finding how to wire it into the harness/dash. Does anyone have any pics of the actual wiring?

Maybe get a hold of Trail Tough. They have a suzuki grave yard and they might have a complete gauge cluster with the vss out of one of the efi sammies. Just a thought.

Yellow wire with a green tracer seems to be normal for the VSS. It have been so on all the suzukis I have seen, although I have never tinkered with a samurai 90 EFI

Someone is sending me a VSS. Do I just need to hook up the one yellow/green wire to one end and ground the other?

Thanks for all the help!!

If the yellow green is the correct for the efi samurai, then yes.

just buy the right cluster and plug in the speedo cable

vss doesnt make it idle rich, because there is no vss signal at idle anyways.
is it possible that the throttle cable was installed too tight, it sounds dumb but ive seen that problem come right from the dealership. mass air sensor is more likely out of calibration, causing an incorrect signal to the ecm..

I am also getting ready to do the vss switch to mine. I have a gauge cluster from a 1990 sidekick but
It has what looks to be a gear driven one. Is that going to work or is 1990 too old? I will get some pics
Tonight when I get home.

89 and 90 trackicks didn't have a VSS. So I don't know what you are looking at, but it isn't a VSS.

Probably not. But its on the same side and this is gear driven off of the odometer side and the gears run down to a cam gear that runs a contact type
Switch and that has 4 wires off of it. A yellow with green tracer a yellow with black tracer a pink wire and finally a black one. So the cam
Gear has lobes on it and at certain points it hits the switch. I don't k ow what it is but thought it might be an old type of vss. But hell I don't know.

I think that is the assembly that turns on the check engine light at certain mileage intervals.

Thanks man. Looks like I get to go back to the bone yard. What years do I need to be looking at?

91 and newer trackicks have a VSS.
90 and new samurais have a VSS.
