Sidekick ignition system

Hey I'm workin on a buddie's samurai with a sidekick 8V 1.6 litre in it. I'm ridding him of his unnecessary wiring, which is basically everything.

I've tried looking at some wiring diagrams but I keep coming to the same conclusion that there doesn't seem to be an igniter for this motor, that somehow the distributor fires the coil. This isn't a DIS system btw, it has a distributor and coil. I come from the wonderful land of toyotas where the igniter sits on the coil

Is this true?

If it is fuel injected i has an igniter. It is black flat and about 1"x2", it has a three wire plug with a little bail/clip holding the plug in.

If you are doing the kick, wiring check out he kick-fix.com simplified schematics. They show everything needed to run the injection/ignition only, no extra crap wiring.

I used their schematics to completely re do my harness and the samurai harness as well. Kick-fix.com is a great reference for swaps and TBI diagnoses.

Let me see what I 'ken dig up

You really need to know what year you are working with. If it is unidentified, Google th number on the ECM and it'll show you what you have. There are so many friggen exceptions and misc wires added throughout the models that all harness are a different game. Even the same years can have a different harness.

Looks like 80-90 does not have an igniter. Here's the 89-90 schematic.
http://kick-fix.com/INJECTORS/89/89-90schem1.jpg

91-95 does have an igniter.
If you are 91-95 8 valve, look here. http://kick-fix.com/ECU/91-95-TBI-schematic-base.jpg

The igniter is in the upper left and connects to:

Orange: pin a12 on ECM
BLK/GRN: Ground
Third wire brown/white: Y's into coil, and back side of noise suppressor. This wire is 12V + ign power (hot when ignition is in run position).

FWIW
I used the samurai noises suppressor 1 side is ground, the other side has two wires; brown and brown/white. Brown connects to the ECM tach single wire, and Brown/White connects to the coil, and igniter.
I hope that helps. If you have any other questions feel free to post here, or shoot me a PM.

Sorry I didn't specify that it is not a fuel injected motor, it's got a carb on it.

So it looks like I don't have an igniter, the coil and distributor are all I need to get the ignition working, plus a couple wires. I'm very interested in how that actually works, does the condensor/capacitor play an active role in creating the spark or is it just another noise suppressor?
