Having Trouble With Binding Somehow
got my 2x2 in today. got to say that i was really impressed when i open up the crate. it was more than i was expecting. very well built and that torch holder thing was very impressive. hats off to everybody that had anything to do with this little machine. and very well crated to. but now to my trouble. got it all put together per instructions. the gantry moved very smooth up and down the rails with no tight spots. went ahead and tighten to drive screws. got all my software and drivers put on with no trouble. fired it up and started jogging it up and down and jogged the tool plate left and right. the tool plate jogged perfect. but when i jog the gantry up and down the rails it gets in a bind as best i can tell somewhere. when i jog it back to the motors it gets in a bind well before it gets all the way to the back. gonna say around 3". i will stop the jog and go the other way with it. it starts of in a bind and then takes off and runs smooth till i get get to the other end and does the same thing. and sometimes it will bind a little bit (but not stall out) about mid length of the table. it binds more as i jog it back close to the motors. it is not bottoming out. it stalls before it gets there. took out the screws on the drive screws and check to see if gantry still moved freely by hand up and down and it does. can you tell me what i need to check? when i get off work tomorrow i will check it all again but i must be missing something. thanks for any input......

the damn instructions are wrong!!
I ran into this as well. If you look at your machine, and you set it up via the quick start quide that came with the unit you will see the 2 x axis motors are plugged into ports 2 and 4 while the gantry motor is plugged into one. This is how the quick start guide tells you to set it up, this is wrong. If you go through the assembly and opertation instructions that shipped with the unit on CD and go to page 17 it will show the X axis motors plugged into ports 2 and 3 not 2 and 4. with the gantry motor still plugged into port 1.
Most people dont see this because most units (at least mine did) came with the motors and control box labled with little colored dots. so they dont read this stage of the instructions and just follow the color codes. if your dots fall off, like mine did, then you have to go back and read the directions. Thats when you find the problem. I hope this helps. I had the same problem but getting the x axis motors plugged into ports 2 and 3 fixed it.

The problem you are describing (binding towards the end of the screws) is more of the fact that the CAM followers on the gantry that define the seperation of the two sides is setup to close or to far from where it should. As the aluminum bracket that holds the screw nut that moves the gantry approaches either end of the machine it pulls or pushes the screw against the mount at that end creating more resistance. Where as in the middle of the table the screw has enough flex to allow it to run. Loosen up the crossmembers and cam followers, jog from one end to the other until smooth, then tighten down the crossmembers and try it again. If that's good, tighten down one side of the gantry cam followers, and try it again. Then the last set.

I can see where having only one side of the X axis trying to do all the work would do the same thing as Rainen suggests if in fact a motor was plugged into the z-axis port instead of where it should be.
