only have 4th gear in my getrag tranny.

so i was driving my 93 cummins down the road and i heard a grind in 5th gear i shifted down to 4th and went back into 5th and no gear drove the rest of the way home in 4th. when i got home i found out there was no gaers other then 4th. is this an easy fix or is the tranny toast?

Probably toast. Sounds like the counter shaft took a total shit. Fourth gear would be the only range that does not route through the counter shaft. It simply connectes the input shaft directly to the main shaft.

Yup, too late to fill it full of sawdust and send it down the road. Think new or rebuild.

could have just sheared the roll pins in the shift rails. common on getrag 360's, i've fixed alot by pulling the top cover off and replacing them with better ones.

The hearing a grind part sounds familiar, both times I`ve had this happen the bearings between the input shaft and main shaft seized, essentially locking the transmission in 4th. Push it a little farther and it`ll blow up the 4th gear syncro and give you everything but 4th again, but, take it apart now and see what is happening.
I really hope your truck has had the trans tunnel cut for transmission access... Makes life much easier.

I am working on my G360 and found a sheared pin as you described on my 5-R fork. (Along with a bad reverse slider ring, the cause of the sheared pin) But i cannot find a supplier for the roll pins. Please let me know where you located the pins or any other info that might get me there. Thanks for your time, I really appreciate any help on this!!

Measure your pin
Go to hardware store
Go to a real hardware store
Pay out the ass

You'll get your part for under $2

This happened to me, and the truck is ~400mi from home at my buddy's house. Can't stay there forever (see thread) and so I'm wondering if I could just drive it home in 4th the whole way?

Then it could sit at my house and I could part it out, look for a tranny at my leisure, etc ... have options at least vs. just trying to firesale it.

No, but the "only having 4th gear" problem occurs when stuff breaks in a variety of transmissions from what I've read ... something about 4th being direct to the transfer case, other gears are off the lay shaft/inner shaft.
I've already driven it 20 miles or so like this, from the road to the mechanik, to one bud's house, then back to another bud's house.
Drives fine in 4th, of course I have to ride the clutch quite a bit from stoplights.
