Beautiful craftmanship, creativity, and execution... this sets a new high bar for "those little things" that impress... from the vent perfs to the inner bracing to the symmetric rivets... damn fine work. Its all about the little things: Trailer edition The little attention getters that make you look and go, "damn, thats nice" or "damn, that's a good idea." Thanks much for sharing inception to execution, with all the steps between. ![]() ![]() ![]() Randii (hack flub-ricator) Last edited by randii; 02-23-2012 at 11:06 AM. |

thank you for the comments
![]() yeah ... i`m very happy how it turned out manches "F-86 Sabre" suggestion really got me going ... i just improvised it quickly ... and to be honest i slightly goofed it up : the air foil is not exactly symmetric...now the trailer will probably forever pull to one side ![]() too bad nobody will ever see the top tank vent detail when the wing tip is at 10' high ... (so i better sneak in another pic here )... besides maybe a bird that is going to use it as a landing platform ... and then probably just shits on it anyway

![]() it is done; the wing is mounted ! ![]() the wing tip is now 114" tall ... with the correct tires and the teardrop marker light on top i should end up at ~ 2 inches under 10 foot overall height. so the trailer will still fit into a 10' shop door i also temporary mounted the rear window "eyebrow". most likely i`m going with a fixed (glazed in) back window; i`m concerned with water leaks in that tilted position. i still need to fab a "collar" to cover the gap between wing and roof

what the hell is up with that
in the background ?maybe it was this guys wingman that didnt make it to the runway ?!? a couple more pics; this is how the wing looks from the inside i caulked the shiat out of the upper side. the underside will also get a coat of caulk and then a coat of bitumen sealer. i will also "double up" the roof spar and rivet/bolt the wing tongue to it. should be water tight and wind proof when finished . i will polish the backwall/roof up to the seam in front of the wing ... the rest of the roof will get a coat of silver rubberized roof sealer. right now i`m in the middle of moving the suspension hangers/axles back into the final position as well as "stiffening up" the frame by adding a extra center tube down the middle ...

![]() I gotta ask, how did you create the holes for the vent? Did you drill that pattern?

I love that wing! If I had metal fab skills I'd put some sort of posing light up there too.

lol ...thanks for the customized quote
![]() thanks Quote:
... oh, it will have lights ... most likely i will follow another idea of 87manche and make two individually wired light circuits; one constant red (DOT conform) marker light setting and one flashing top beacon setting for "in camp"

talking about the BUD; i could not throw away the all aluminum sat dish ... i figured i may have a need for curved aluminum parts one day ... and i was right ! ; when i re-skinned the nose of the trailer all the supports have been trashed beyond repair ... but the curved sat dish extrusions had EXACTLY the radius i needed ![]() here is the nose with a couple of the curved pieces already installed i will add 3 pieces more, one that is tying into the new mid frame rail and two additional ones behind the SS gravel shields that i still have to add i added one short 2x3 tube to the upper part of the tongue and a full length 2x3 to the underside to re-enforce the frame (so that it can handle the additional weight of the ATV`s) i also added more frame crossbraces (salvaged from the Airstream) and started to hang the holding tanks. the black tank that is sitting on top of the frame is also salvaged from the Airstream (it will be down in the frame when finished) i found room for 1x 21gallon fresh tank between the axles and 2x 21gallon grey right between the axles and the black tank. i may add another 16-30 gallon fresh tank under the folding bed (would be on top of the frame and right in front of the driver side tires)

as you can tell i dont really have a solid plan ... i just improvise as i go ![]() i have some nice home made aluminum loading ramps... but i guess i better come up with a way to fasten or hook them to the trailer hmmm... how about running a strip of aluminum flat bar along the door opening? maybe a 2" x .125 6061 bolted to the trailer with 1/2" thick spacers this way i could hook the ramp ends into it the first ATV will need to be turned 90 degree (it will be sitting lengthwise right over the axles between kitchen and the folded up mid bed) the second one can drive straight in (sitting crosswise in front of the axles) talking about axles; i moved the axles into the final position i really like the position set back like that ... and the rounded ass with the rollers (another part salvaged from the Airstream) should give me a excellent departure angle for dragging the trailer into some remote camping spots. i also worked on the spare tire placement and holder here is a pic in front of my current Streamline trailer; the Spartanette does not look all that large by itself but she is actually a lot bigger the the SL in every dimension notice the bright silvery spot on the side ... i did a polish test with Nuvite (actually the coarse and not the finish mix) she will be very bright when completely polished ![]() but its slow, hard and dirty work .... i dont look forward to that

i think that guy had also one heck of a budget
... my "budget" has one key slogan; "reuse is the best form of recycling" right now i`m cleaning and straightening all the pieces from the two mangled door frames and doors ... damage is not as bad as it looked first so i should be able to reuse almost everything to build the double side door ![]() the new door skins are already roughly cut (i bet you can guess where i got them ; .... salvaged from the Airstream side walls! lol )
