Ready to put the axle in. I was going to put disk brakes in the rear, almost everything to do it. Got lazy and didnt want to buy any more parts so I left the drums. They have fresh parts in them so it will be fine until I want to change them.
![]() Just some rollers on it.

Got one leaf pack built. Used the spacer for the OEM helper spring, and cut the overload down so it is just a spacer. I bought 1/2 center bolts and stock is 7/16. I decided to drill out all of the center bolt holes, getting good at sharpening bits. Probably going to burn through 2 bits drilling out all the springs.

You seem a nice friendly chap. A real kind and fluffy personality I'd say.
So what's the new motor Mr Woods? Company car from the Merc dealer, or something a little more sedate?

i think you need to reread that part of the law. it says you have to be over 26001 lbs and the trailer must be over 10k. since he'll be under the 26001lb wieght limit he's fine. otherwise every old couple with a F350 and a 5th wheel camper would need a class A cert.

Finished both leaf packs today. When I got my U-bolts bent I got them longer than stock thinking there would be plenty of thread. Wrong, had to order a $40 5/8-18 die to thread them deaper.
![]() Difference between the 10.25 and 10.5 yokes. Super duty is on bottom, they swapped no problem. ![]() Made a new breather also, put it right over the ring. Get that heat out!

You do know breathers arn't for cooling?
They're there to allow for expansion and contraction of air and fluids within the axle tube so it doesn't end up blowing the seals out.

So besides it pushing oil out whats the difference of it being in the tube or in the cover? When I took apart the SD axle its breather was completely plugged.
Is the air/fluid expansion not caused by heat? Last edited by Back Woods; 05-17-2012 at 03:39 AM. |

Yes, as the diff works it warms up the oil, which will expand to a degree, along with the air in the axle.
The diff and bearings are splash lubricated by the oil (as opposed to a pressurised lubrication system as with engines and some gearboxes) which also assists with keeping things cool, along with a heat sink effect from the axle casing means with the right oil at the correct level they won't purposefully overheat. As the axle isn't designed to be under pressure, neither are the seals in the hubs and diff pinion, hence the need for the breather, to allow the air to move as things warm up/cool down, and also why you get leaky seals when breathers get blocked. Your breather will work as is, and quite possibly work well as a temp gauge for the back axle, but otherwise offers no real benefit.
