friend going prospecting for gold, needs a truck + travel trailer or RV, budget: $10k

so a friend from church got tired of his job & is packing up his wife & daughter to go spend 7 months out west prospecting for gold.

he's looking for a truck & a travel trailer, or an RV, for this adventure.

any idea what he could score w/ a budget of $10k that'd be reliable?

we're located in Virginia... the closer the better if you know of any deals.

thanks,
scott

If he's planning on saving money by burning alternate fuels, I'd recommend the popular Uhaul option (7.3 IDI 26ft box truck). These can be had for $2500-$3500.

If he's planning on just running diesel, I'd look for any MDT box truck that gets good MPG, is reliable, and easy to work on. These can be had for $3500-$5000.

If he doesn't get caught up in the Joneses, does the box work himself, and isn't vain, he can easily build out a full truck with all the amenities for less than his $10K budget.

Here's an example:

A couple other ideas are to get a car trailer or gooseneck/5th wheel and build it out like a camper OR buy a bus and convert that into a camper. If he gets a flat nose bus, he'll probably have a higher resale since those can be made to look just like a store bought RV.

I'm near this one. I could look at it if you want.

^^^^^^ That would be a nice restoration project if he'd take $3K or so.

^^^^^^ Probably a little more realistic

hit the skoolie board and find a partially finished project where someone lost interest or ran out of money.

Cummins or DT466 engine preferred and plentiful.

Yeah but where else are you going to find a bus with 25k miles plus the most desirable engine and transmission of the day. Heck the new buses with that mileage are still 40-60k.

I am surprised all the bids with no mention how many miles are on it.

Blue Birds with that style interior are AWFUL to drive. I can't even imagine what they were thinking. Most of the gauges are combined into one "multi-gauge" that you cycle through by pressing a hard-to-reach switch. Actually all the switches are in stupid places. Also the location of the driver's side mirrors creates a huge blind spot.

oh yes

paint it "RV white" and you get peeps offering $5100 for it (as of right now) ....
with a little searching you can find similar spec`ed BB`s for $3500 outright (but they are skoolie yellow )

I live north of you in Culpeper (22701). A buddy has a 83ish' International cargostar 2 axle road tractor old Military here. Runs and drives.

Something like 70k on the ticker. Needs some cleaning up, minor things like some gauges have quit but he has it listed at $3500 currently. Have your buddy come buy it.

I would link the old ad but his picks are gone. DT466 and Allison auto. 5th wheel.

Honest to God no bullshit I think with some cleaning up, through a radio in it, tinker with the little stuff and it's be a great towrig.

We had toyed with the idea of doing a pintle hitch and a long tag to tow a small 4x4, tools, things needed to live, and through a box or camper on the back of the chassis.

I'll go see if it fires right now. Been a while since it started.

EDit:

I just went out shot a 30 sec vid of it starting it in the dark and have no idea where it just stored and I auto erase the memory card every time.

Batteries on truck are weak and need charged, it's been forever. It did crank, fire and run/idle. Air is leaking out from a air line in dash, but I'm sure it's easily repaired.

Come awn and get it.

Sorry guys, forgot to check this thread & reply. I'll pass the info along! I'm not certain how "move-in ready" they're looking for, but who knows, these may get some ideas flowing...
