New Cummins

Hey guys, I just bought a 2001 HO 6 Speed Dodge 4x4 today. I feel pretty lucky because here in California it seems pretty hard to find a manual let alone a 6 speed. My question is, it has two guages on the left to measure manifold pressure and turbo something? It also has a K & N and what looks to be a 5" exhaust kit. Should I be stoked. The truck only has 56,000 miles on it so I figure it is just broken in. Do these mods mean that I probably have a chip as well. How much horespower and torque should I be pushing. I picked the truck up at a dealership so I didn't talk to the previous owner. Thanks for the help, I'm a super newbie at Diesel stuff but hope to learn a bunch. It would be nice to hook it up to a dyno. Later, Bryan.

I don't know why they would have a manifold pressure guage.
The guages will probably be Exhaust Gas Temp (EGT) or fuel pressure along with the turbo boost guage. 5" exhaust is big, sounds like some ones was pumping alot of power or just wanted the look of the big 5", 4" is more common. Look for a box of some kind that has a name other than dodge or cummins on it to tell you if you have any kind of "box" on it. Also check out
www.turbodieselregistry.com for all the info you could ever want on that CTD.

Look driver side behind the pump under the middle of the intake should be a plug that has a yellow sticker od a 4-plug weather-tec style plugged into it. Then find a box that says edge or something from the aftermarket on it. Should be easy to find an aftermarket box on the 24v.

Go to a Dodge dealer and run the vin. They can tell you the last or origanal owner. They will be able to get the name and address. Then just call information and give them a call.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, maybe it's only a 4 inch. All I know is it looks big. I look around tomorrow for the chip stuff. TDR is cool and there seems to be a ton of info. This 6spd rocks, I can't wait to tow with it. Bryan.

If you are running a cummings diesel, I cannot stress enough the importance of a fuel pressure guage. It is cheap and simple to install and has the potential to save you THOUSANDS of dollars. The dodge fuel delivery system has a lift pump and injector pump. The manual lift pump is known for not being that reliable after about 60K miles. The injector pump will pick up the slack but will eventually burn itself up. Fuel pressure guage $49--- Lift pump $400--- Injector pump $3800-----having a fuel pressure guage to know when your lift pump is non operational.....priceless.

I wonder if the P/O was running a gauge to measure the drive pressure of the turbo... normally, only the ragged edge guy do that..

Kinda makes ya wonder what he HAD on there before. Since the P/O sounds like an enthusiast, he may be on the TDR, most likely with a '03 or '04 truck.

I know I'd be happy to talk with the new owners of a rig I sell..

first of all........its CUMMINS

second of all....know what your talking about before spewing ca-ca

lift pumps from CumminsWest or whereever you are....cost 149 bucks.

injection pumps of the Bocsh VP44 variety cost in the nieghborhood of 1100-1200 bucks. i remember reading of someone getting them for like 750??? i dont know where.

Bryan- you will love that truck. i bought the same back in May. do some reading over at TDR and all will be fine. do as suggested and get a pressure gauge to keep an eye on your fuel pressure, boost and EGT are nice, but i wouldnt say required on a stock truck. as soon as that power bug bites you you better go get em though

Alex

Same thing as a turbo boost gauge One of the most common additions for the "bolt on" aftermarket.
