tubo leaking oil 01 CTD

My 01 Diesel has oil inside the air tube going from the turbo to the intercooler. Does anyone know how much if any oil may leak by the turbo seals. Mine has about 50K on it. No white smoke or anything and it is not losing enough oil that I can tell. Thanks

a "little" oil on the output side of a turbo is not uncommon. The problem is if its starting to get to be a lot and the seal is about to fail it can be REAL dangerous. A Diesel can run on motor oil and get into a run away.

Clean it out...drive it for a week and see how much its dumping. Light residue....probably nothing to worry about.

Now if you can turn a wrench don't fall for that "Turbo's cost a $1,000" attitude. Its been a while since I had a turbo anything but you can buy a cartridge (its the bearing block and impellers...you stick it in your existing housing) for around $250-350 from places like "Turbo Auto". Hell if the impeller and shaft is true and the impeller is not damaged the seals can be had for around $20.

Are you letting it idle down? do you have a Turbo timer on it? That goes a LONG way to helping a Turbo live a LONG trouble free life. If you run them hard and shut them down you can warp the impeller shaft and then they will do in the seals and blow out.

yes they can but with a 5.9 (or 3.9) cummins they usually just smoke and

A. blow shit piles of oil out of the tail pipe (if the exhaust side seal gos)

B. smoke,chug, and usually rev for shit (cause the turbo shaft usually gets harder to turn, so you get little to no boost) when the front seal blows

it can lead to a blown seal which could let the bushing eat away which lets the compressor wheel eat the housing and sends massive amounts of shit down the line into the engine or vice versa with the turbine wheel

I had a hx35 rebuilt and a 40 compressor put on it @ HTT for $400

I am good ok with a wrench but I have never touched a turbo and this is my daily. Can the turbo seal be changed pretty easily? Are there any reasonable upgrades while I am in there?

all it does is spin.....

the hardest thing IMO is getting the big snapring in/out of the compressor housing

a full kit is like 75-100$ but dosnt have EVERY thing some of the stuff inside gets reused

U got a number for them I am out of town right now. I talked to some guys at banks and a few others and they all gave me the should not be more than .04 play in it. I opened it up and checked it out but it does not seem excesive. No play fwd and aft but some up and down but I think there is less than .04 between the impeller and the housing. Thanks

there will be more if the engine has not been running in a while (2-3 hours)

this is a rebuild kit for MOST HX40's, and HX35's it also works on hx30 and hy30

so I assume it would work on a hy35 too
