i know you are all wondering wtf?!
but i have the truck and its a dog the way it is so i am wondering if its worth buying a turbo system for it, or should i wait and plunk the dough for a newer powerstroke ford. i need a tow vehicle, but something that isnt gonna cost me $800 a month to sit in the driveway 5 days a week. |

I've got a 92 with the 7.3 IDI engine (roughly the same) and the turbo really woke the old girl up. I've got a non-wastegated ATS turbo that I bought used off of eBay on it. I also installed a 4" MBRP exhaust for and old bodystyle Powerstroke, and a complete ATS Intercooler kit. I'd say it runs as well as a stock or slightly modded first gen Powerstroke. You can buy a turbo system off of ebay for under $1K easily, and make your truck run like a different vehicle altogether.
Check out www.oilburners.net for more info, and for fuel tuning tips, but I wouldn't hesitate to spend the equivalent of 1 or 2 months payments on a new truck trying to make your old one run better. Ryan |

If you turbo the 6.9 expect to replace the bottom end my brother just bought a 87 F-350 from a family freind that originally had 6.9 idi with a hypermax turbo system, but the original owner had to have the 6.9s bearings replaced twice. So he swapped in a 93 7.3idi and it hasnt had any problems with it. The truck will currently out run a 97 powerstroke thats been modified

as the goodoleboy said.... if you turbo a IDI Ford diesel, they will outrun and outpull a 95-97 powerstroke, and are a lot easier to work on and diagnose. The turbo kits are complete for under 2K.
I would say, if the truck is in good condition and you don't think it will need major repairs in the next couple years, you should enjoy the power of a hypermax or banks kit. The ONLY reason I would want a powerstroke over an IDI would be the newer body style and the powerstroke is generally not as loud as the IDI.
