What year 7.3 diesels went to turbo?
Sorry, Im not familiar with the ford diesels. Have seen some cheap late 80s and 90s F350s advertised and might go with one for a throwdown worktruck to haul construction crap in and out of my woods property. Which ones have turbo? Thanks for any info.

Same deal, the ford built motor was a manual pump, though they are huge money when they fail, and cannot make near the power the PSD can.

The 6.9 started in 1983. The 7.3 IDI 1988 - The 7.3 T-444 started in mid 1994 and they are all turbo'd. The 6.0 came around in 2003 -- And the 6.4 hit the streets in 2008 trucks...

The pre-powerstroke turbos were only made for half a year in the '94 model and used an ATS kit. I have an '88 with the non-turbo IDI, a turbo kit really wakes the engine up and they're all mechanical good solid engines. Turbo kits can be had used on craigslist for under $1k, I picked up a banks sidewinder needing a rebuild for $300.

I had a late '94 factory turbo F250 4x4.......FWIW my current tow rig has more power. Maybe that truck was worn out, but I was not impressed with the pulling power or the economy.

Alright thanks for the info. I will consider an older 7.3 F350 worthy of cheap beater status. I wont mess with the powerstroke - that $1800 bucks for a set of injectors holy crap. Im normally all GM but if an f350 is almost given to me i will give it a try.

'Nother endorsement for the ol' IDI motors. Mine knocks down 20 mpg, and has pulled 12,000 without any fuss.
The quad cab F-350 I had for a while had a banks side winder on an IDI, and it would lay black smoke from the pipe and shit and be gone in nothing flat. Don't feel like you're "settling for" a Ford IDI. I'm a Chevy man as well, but I'll be keeping my IDI til one of us dies.

I used to own a 94 with the factory turbo, while it was sourced from ATS I think it was a bit differant then the kit they sold, I know they had some upgrades for them. I wouldn't go looking for a turbo IDI truck, the power level increase wasn't that much, I was told Ford added the turbo more for emissions then anything else and after owning one I would not be surprised, mine certainly wasn't a powerhouse.

The factory turbo was avalible in 93 & 94. My shop has a 93 F350 w/ factory turbo. As best I know, the non-turbo was also avalible in 93 & 94, and the psd later in 94. So, a 94 ford diesel can be any of three motors, all of which are 7.3L, and not the same. (turbo idi's were essentially the same as non turbo but used differnt pump, injectors, pistons (larger wrist pin, maybe also lower compression) and rods. Powerstrokes are completely different.
The factory turboed trucks were not remotely the same as an aftermarket turbo kit. The motors are only rated at 190-ish Hp versus 170 for a no turbo & 215 for the first gen PSD. From their website, I beilive the banks kit on a non turbo 7.3 is good for 260-ish Hp. There is quite a bit of speculation that ford deliberatly made the idi turbo wimpy so it wouldn't be more powerful than the psd's. While the idi's will never make the power that a chipped psd will, with a turbo they're definetely nothing to laugh at. I'm not sure what stock rating are for the later trucks, but I think a idi with a turbo & intercooler will rival, if not beat most of the trucks with the possible exception of the newests diesel. Not bad for a 20+ year old truck. I know that at one dyno event I went to, a turbo idi beat a couple of brand new trucks. (diesels, this was a few years ago, 05 maybe) Anyway, IMHO, the old idi's are not to be lightly dismissed, athough finding a nice one these day is getting hard. I can't argue that they'll beat a psd in making power, but for the price of a late 90's truck, you can get an idi, put a rebuilt motor & turbo on it, and have a comperable and more reliable truck. ~John |
