98 Dodge Dually 4x4 Problem
On a recent trip to PA from TX my ABS warning light and brake light came on. With that the ABS is not working anymore. I checked both the in dash fuse and the main fuse under the hood and both are fine. I checked the brake wear on the drums and there is plenty of brake left compared to new ones I bought and just returned. I had Autozone try and pull the codes, but there were none. My next step is the ARWL (Anti-Rear Wheel lock) sensor on the Dana 80. I will try and replace it tomorrow to see if that remedies it, but if not are there any other things I need or should look at? I am not going to take an ass raping from a dealership.

From what I have seen with the ABS sensor in the rear end is that over time the gear lube and crap will build up a layer on the tone ring (attached to the carrier) I say that before replacing the sensor I would take the rear cover off, take some carb clean or brake clean and spray the sensor and rotate the diff cleaning all of the teeth on the tone ring very well. Replace the cover and refill with gear lube. Go drive it and see if that helps. This has worked for me many times on many vehicles.

We've had the ABS lights come on on our '99 Dodges, but the brake warning light never came on with it... Not to insult you, but you did check the fluid level, right? and also possibly the level sensor in the res too?

I did check the fluid level in the master and it's normal. I will try and pull the cover off and clean the tone ring. If the sesor cannot get a reading will that shut the ABS system down?

You may want to take your truck to a respected shop and have them pull the codes. No offense to autozone, but the people who work there are not qualified to diagnose problems. I would not just start replacing parts with out knowing were the problem is. I shouldn't cost more than an hours labor to pull the ABS codes, then you'll know what direction to go.
Good Luck |

The only time I've had this happen was when my vacuum to the booster was low. FWIW
