it can be done with a short wheel base but its not fun, th elonger the WB the more stable and comfy it will tow. dullies of course can handle more as well, but a good long bed and or ext cab 3/4 -1 ton truck single wheel will pull just fine, jIMmy

I tow with a crew cab short bed super duty. Granted the extra two doors make the truck longer than a two door, but I've pulled a 24' gooseneck with no problems at all. No problems with bumper-pull trailers either... FWIW.
You might consider what the truck will be used for when you're not towing. Mine is my DD and I don't like the turning radius of the longbed, or the tight squeeze's presented by the dually. hope this helps! Ray

Ditto what Tx4x4Fun said. I've got a 2500HD crew cab short bed 4x4 Duramax/Allison.

same here...CC short bed SRW PSD. The crew cab short bed still has as long a wheelbase as any other configuration other than the CC long bed. i wanted the CC for passengers but didn't need a long bed and didn't want to sacrifice turning radius. Just remember, longer and wider is always more stable. However there comes a point where the advantages gained by going longer and/or wider don't outweigh the consequences.

As far as the dually thing goes, DRW vehicles do have more rear axle capacity if you need that, but they are not more stable for nromal driving. The lateral stability is based on spring spacing, not wheel spacing. You are trying to control body roll on the pavement, and the springs are what does that. The spring spacing on SRW and DRW is usually, if not always, the same. Now if you plan on trying to roll the truck over, it becomes a different story....

Longer is better.
I tow with a 4dr long-box one-ton SRW. No tail-wagging the dog problems... but then, my truck is 20' long end to end, and I tow with a 16' deck car trailer (probably about 20' overall) Downside is, with a long gooseneck, I wouldn't be able to flat-tow a third rig behind it, for fear of being over-length on secondary roads. I'm also told with a gooseneck the long wheelbase tow-rig isn't as important, since the gooseneck is more stable to begin with. So if you want to pull a BIG gooseneck (3 cars?) a single-cab long-box would make a good tractor, and maybe the shorty wouldn't be too bad, either.

If you go with a crew cab short box you'd be as long or longer than a standard cab long box which was the standard for towing for years. Any of you remember the Ford trailer specials. standard cab long box but the drive axle was set futher to the rear than normal. Those were great for a pull trailer setup.

At the ranch we tow with both a 4 door short box(flatbed) and a 4 door long bed dully
Both pull the ball trailers and the gooseneck trails with out thinking about it. I plan on pulling a trialer or my jeeps with a cab over so I went to a longbox 4 door. Steve(YES finally got the truck)

Assuming you are reffering to a standard cab long box or longer, you are fine. I would not try with a standard cab short box or blazer/bronco. They are kinda squirrely and the drivetrain usually isnt sturdy enough(3.08 gears, etc...). Ive heard of alot of people using them but one unbalanced load and you are swearving and jack knifed or rolling on the freeway.
