tow rig fuel economy/ EFI

My dad was just given a 82 3/4 ford that needs a motor. The old guy he got it from says the thing gets 10mpg whether its towing or not. How can we get better fuel econmy out of this thing? Id definatly like to convert to EFI somehow. Either buying a low mile factory efi moter out of a wreck, or rebuilding the old motor and adding aftermarket efi... Thoughts?

thanks

actually ya' can't.... the technology just wasn't there for 1982.
To rectify that problem will just put you in the poor house.
If you buy a new truck, you will get the better milage but then you have payments.... so just bite the bullet and replace the old fords motor and whatnot. You will get at least 5 mpg less milage (probably) than a new truck, but you have alot of $$$ left for gas..... my .02 worth

Does that truck have a 460? If so, 10mpg is prety good for that guzzler! Even if it were Fuel injected it would'nt get much better.

I have never known anyone that has a 454 or a 460 to get better than 12mpg, and even then I think the actual milage is more like 10mpg.

My 97 Chevy 1 ton 4x4 dually gets maybe 12mpg unloaded without the AC on, but 10mpg is the norm. My 87 Chevy dually 2wd got the same. And everyone I know that has older carburated big blocks gets close to the same.

I know a few people who have older 460's that claim to only get like 7mpg!

I still dont see what EFI does for gas milage.. my old truck with a 360 got between 9-13.. my 96 with a 318 gets between 10-14. Not a big difference, and if i tuned up the 360, i bet i could have gotten 15 out of it easily, but never cared enough. Oh, and the 318 truck has an overdrive too

My 460 EFI got 10-12 empty, 6 loaded. I don't think thats far from the carbed models. The 351W will only get another 1MPG better or so. Swap in a 302 or 300 6cyl if you want milage.
