Synthetic Oil in a PSD??
I was under the impression that Delo was the "Oil To Use" in my 2000 PSD. I stumbled accross Amsoil's website and now I'm not so sure. I really like the idea of 10,000 filter and 20,000 oil change intervals that they advertise. Does anyone run synthetic oils in thier PSD or Cummins? Are there any drawbacks to the Amsoil or other synthetics?
Here's the website-http://www.performanceoiltechnology.com/forddiesel.htm

I find it interesting that they say oil manufacturers are doing the 3000 mile oil change recommendation. Since really.. most of the time I've seen it its been from the engine manufacturer in their service schedule. For example Cummins (since I have one I know it) recommends an oil and oil filter change at 7500 miles and fuel filter at 15,000 intervals. Needless to say I think I'll stick with the Delo 400. I really dont get upset about $22 every 7500 miles

I have a 95 PSD, I do my oil changes every 3000 or 4000 miles using Rotella T which is great shit and mobile one filter, fuel filter a must at 15,000 for any diesel. Oil changes and fuel filter changes and clean air filter is the key to a diesel's long life. I personally think 7500 miles is pushing it.. But that just my .02 And as far as 20,000 miles oil changes I would never do that amsoil or not thats bullshit, 40 bucks every so often is well worth it in my book

I don't know squat about the synth oil, but I do know a thing or two about the dino oil that comes out of my crankcase. I change mine every 4k and have an oil analysis done every third oil change. The analysis will tell you if your oil is doing its job, if the filter is doing its job, and even if the air filter is doing its job. It will also point out if there's a ring problem (fuel present in oil) or coolant problems. They also recommend an oil change interval based on the condition of your oil. I have it done by Blackstone Labs in Illinois ( www.blackstone-labs.com ) and it's about $20 per analysis.

There has been endless discussion about synthetic oil vs. dino oil on the TDR (www.turbodieselregister.com). Many of the guys that defend synthetic oil are also the same guys that sell them.
Personally, I don't see the need to go 20K between oil changes. I like the idea of inspecting my engine and to see if there are any potential problems. Waiting 20K between oil changes might be too late if you have a coolant leak. Those that are heavily bombed (modified) will typically want to change their oil every 3K miles because you will be getting lots of soot in the oil from fueling too much and producing smoke. Changing synthetic oil at 3K miles becomes too cost prohibitive. Oil analyis is a good idea too. I'll stick with my Rotella T or Delo 400. Charles

One more thing.... On a PSD, you will want to change you oil on schedule because the injectors are actuated by oil (HEUI). Don't want to get oil foaming when they get real old because the truck will run like crap.

I use fleetguard, which for my 12 valve are about $5
. And actually change about every 4k anyway. And yep the analysis is a good idea

I use Motorcraft filters tht I buy at WalMart for $9. The dealer sells the same filter for $16. You want an FL1995. I get my fuel filters from Diesel Injection Service in Texas. Same filter you get at the dealer for about half the price. www.dieselpage.com . I also get my coolant additive and test strips from them. For coolant I get it at the International dealer.

Get everything you can from the IH dealer.
Its the right stuff, and the definition of heavy duty.

My ex-brother-in-law worked for IH for many years as a mechanic, service manager, regional trouble shooter, and in engine development at their headquarters before retiring after 35 years. He told me that one of IH’s biggest problems with Ford is that IH wanted significantly more crankcase capacity than Ford was willing to agree to. This would lead me to believe that more frequent oil changes would be a wise thing to do. As I recall he told me about 2,500-3,000 miles would be what he recommended, however my memory is a little foggy on that and can’t check it out since I don’t talk to him anymore since my divorce.
