Trailer with no suspension?
I've got a friend that may be selling his trailer some time soon. Its a double axle single car trailer that he tows his Toy on, but its got no brakes or suspension. If i got it i would swap out the axles for ones with brakes, but how much difference does suspension make? He tows with his motorhome with no problem, but i would be towing with a full size pickup or a bronco, depending on what i get. Is suspension really important on a car hauler, or does it make much difference?

I'd sure check the welds holding the axle on! Get a pic, I've got to see this.

As long as it is not some booty fab trailer it will be just fine if the price is right.. You will need to make sure the trailer sits level or slightly nose up when loaded and attached to your truck otherwise it will be a case of the tail wagging the dog..

I'm pretty sure the axles are bolted on, not welded, ie. U-bolts to the frame, tho i haven't taken a good look. Hes been towing with it for at least 10 years without a problem, but his tow rig is bigger than mine. Its definitely not a bootie fab trailer, quite well built and professional looking. Believe me this guy knows his shit when it comes to building stuff. guy has every too imaginable and knows how to use em. Last time i saw him he was fabbing up a 1/4 scale model out of 1/2" tubing to test suspension designs for his upcoming buggy project. I dont think he built the trailer, but everything he has is overbuilt to the max and well engineered. I'm not worried about its structural strength, just how it will tow.

I towed a small trailer last week with about a cord of wood in it that had no suspension. It sucked. I could feel every bump in the road and with weight on it the only suspension will be the air in the tires. The stupid thing just wants to bounce down the road. I can't imagine that it's good for the trailer. Right now I'm working on putting some springs under this thing before I take the trailer back.
I pulled a gooseneck stock trailer the week before with about 5,500 pounds of cattle in it. That thing pulled way better than this little POS with a cord of firewood in it. Last edited by CSP; 10-02-2002 at 06:09 PM. |

If he is your friend have him let you tow something around one day to see how it tows with your truck then make your decision..

I would def. put suspension on it. you can buy alxes with torsion sprins on it if you don't want leaf springs. I towed a house-boat trailer (axles welded to the frame) and when the trailer hit a bump you could watch the beams shake and then the whole ass of the truck (heavy 3/4 ton) was bouncing. If the price is right get the trailer and then suspended it.

Todd where did you get your trailer? Sounds like you got a damn good deal if its new. Two 7k axles
i think thats a bit over kill for me, my rig barely weighs 4k. i think i could probably get a trailer with a pair of 3.5k's and never have a problem.Dallas
