PSD starting problems

Having some problems starting at high alitudes when it is cold. I'm guessing that ether the glow plugs don't work or hoping that they could be built up with carbon. Has anyone had this problem and fixed it? Need some Idea's or a heads up before I tear into it.

Any info thanks

More of a cold thing than altitude.....

But, check the glow plug relay.
You can check it with a test light or meter.
Much more likley to fail than the glow plugs.

Also, have you changed the fuel filter ever....

Thanks for the relay bit.
First started in the middle of may in tahoe(altitude). New fuel filter every 3,000 miles

will check the relay tomorrow

relay

Mine did the same thing in winter, I had it plugged in and still had to cycle it a few times. I put in a new relay, fired right up. I boke my old relay to see how bad it was and the contacts were burned from arcing so bad. I think the relays are only about $20

Probably the relay. I keep a spare in the toolbox. Ford will want about $70-80 for a new one. NAPA has part number GPR-109 for about $20. They don't list it for the Powerstroke, but it works fine. The contacts will be rotated 90 degrees from stock relative to the mounting plate, but it doesn't matter. Just put the big wires on the big lugs and little wires on little lugs. Since its a switch there is no positive or negative.

I had the same problem but mine turned out to be the starter
they are very sensitive to starting rpm and it really shows in the winter ...but check the other stuff first (fuel filter, relay, plugs)

To test the glow plugs hook your test light to the + terminal on the battery and touch the tip to the electrical connector of each glow plug..If the light lights up the plug is good if it don't it is bad..
