Exclamation Goodyear tire failure coverup

I just finished watching the season premier episode of the fifth estate (an investigative reporting program) and the topic tonight was Goodyear Load Range E tires. They didn't say which model or size due to a court imposed gag order however they did flash one size and model name briefly across the screen. That tire was the 245/75R16 Wrangler AT/S in Load Range E. The tires fail and the tread peels off the carcass. Apparently Goodyear has known about this since 1995 and did not fully correct the problem until mid-2000.

There's lots of talk on the TDR about this, folks taking tires back and getting free replacements. Something about the tires having an S in the circle are the ones affected.

This is true. My G/F was towing her horse trailer when one of the tires tread peeled off. The local tow truck driver told her about this problem.

We took the trailer to a Goodyear dealer and they replaced all 5 tires. They filed the claim with Goodyear for her. I believe she ended up paying about $79.00. (something about the calculation on the amount of use). Anyway $79 for all new tires (including the spare) is not bad.

They handled it very professionally with no questions asked. The key is the S inside of a circle on the sidewall. It applies to several Goodyear tire types with the E load range.
