New Crawler Hauler! Ex U-Haul but not a box van!

Here it is, let me know what ya'll think. Specs are 1995 Ford F450, 7.3 Turbo diesel, A/C blows cold, engine has 20K on it. Tires are 90% on the pass side there is a diesel air compressor. Oh and a 12K Warn winch on front. Got it for $2500

Plans are paint, stock it with tools and spare parts, and a tire rack in the bed area. I was curious if anyone on here has ever done a hauler out of one of these trucks. And if there were any unexpected issues with them.

Heck of a deal! That engine alone is worth close to that.

Seen those before and thought they would be cool haulers, just wonder how much weight the ramps are rated for. You could probably get a light buggy on there and tow a bumper pull camper.

Are you gonna keep the rack up top or pull a trailer? Sick deal for 2500

Might shorten the rack, and stop it behind the cab. If I keep it, I can carry my TJ, and my dads at the same time. I need to load up my jeep on the top rack, and drive it. Might be squirmy with the weight up so high.

The rack is well built. Its designed to carry the trailers they rent when they brake down on the side of the road. Those must weigh 1500-2000lb empty, add in 3K more for all the furniture they would be loaded with. They should hold a 3500lb jeep. They are built with a combo of 2X2 1/4 wall tubing, pretty big c channel, and heavy extruded metal. The truck is rated at 1.5 tons i think. Its an F450

A quick ride to Vegas would get you one, They have a bigger one for $4000
http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/ctd/2315485301.html

Only problem with the bigger one was... It was big! The F450 is like driving a long bed truck. The big one is 1.5 feet taller, and 3 or 4 foot longer. Also its non turbo.

Sounds like you have 7 months to get your toys bought, because once the kid pops out. Nothing new will be allowed in! Get the new stuff now, and take it apart so she cant make you sell it!

Not sure that it matters to you, but I'd imagine you'd be fairly overloaded carrying the jeep on there. Even if it is only 3500lbs. I might have gove for the International myself, but keep posting the evolution of this thing. I remember seeing those trucks for years and always thinking they were pretty neat.

Thats a lot of metal on there. whats the gvw and what does the truck weigh?

my first upgrades would be airbags out back and 19.5s at the least..

That big one looks like a deal..if i had the room id buy it and keep it for the drag car.

I don't think they would have a loaded trailer on top. More than likely, they would bring out an empty trailer, transfer everything, then load up the empty trailer.

gotta snag pics with your rig on it.

i'd be worried about the weight up top.... and the overall weight in general.

but, i think it could work well if configured properly.

Correct. I worked at Uhaul in college and these trucks were used to transfer EMPTY trailer from lot to lot. And only the 5x8 and smaller trailers, not the heavier 6x12 trailers.

If a trailer broke down - they would send out a repair a guy and he would:
A) Fix it and send them on there way.
B) Get a flat bed tow truck to haul them a few miles in town.
C) Bring another trailer and a 'trans-load' crew to unload the broken one into the good one.

Pretty sure the GVW's 15,000. I'd guess the truck being around 10,000 empty.

Fucking A dude. I had a thread going about these "service" trucks awhile back. Even emailed a lady at Uhaul back and forth asking about them. I would love to jump on one of these if the price was right.

Oh, post a pic with your rig on it! I'm ultra curious to see where you park it and how you tie it down!

Here you go, im not going to carry it this far forward. I just had a little free time this morning and loaded it. I think I will carry it with the front tires 2 foot or so past the break over point where it flattens out. It feels nice up there, but I do need to put some taller rails on the inside rails. So I dont drop it into the center off the rails. Also, the suspension on the truck squatted 1-2 inches, I dont feel like the truck is anywhere close to being overloaded. I dont think I will try to carry 2, but with 1 everything looks very good. Also someone asked about tiedown points, I will weld d rings in alot of places, up the rack system so tie'ing down a rig will be easy.

What's your overall height witth the rig up top?

Wondering what your weights are.

Looks like you have a good tow rig. How's it do on hills?
