I was worried, since I have cut out my muffler, and replaced it with a straight pipe. I still have my factory cat, but no muffler. I took it to a smog place and was in and out in 20 min. they glanced under the hood, and then looked for the cat. then shut the hood, and told me it passed fine. didn't do the snap test or anything. a lot less painful than I expected, but I'm $52 poorer.

I live in the central valley/ California one of the largest cheese producing areas in the US. The tree huggers here are complaining about the gas the cows let off when they fart/ shit. Won't be long and we'll smog testing those too.

yeah.. it was pretty painless, and I was a bit nervous about not having a muffler. All in all it went smoothly, but it sounds like diesel smog is the high $$ ticket. The smog guy made lots of $$ for about 10 minutes worth of looking under the hood. Maybe I should open up a diesel only smog station? LOL

did you have any other mods. I have a dp tuner that i can tune to stock settings. I was hoping not to have to remove the chip for the tuner. But i've heard that it still won't pass unless the chip is removed. Also I was told I need to get some sort of "aftermarket" sticker from AFE for the cold air intake filter. anyone else hear this?

I went last week and failed. Not for not having a cat under the truck, The tec looked under the truck 5 times four with a flashlight and then with a mirror. But for the cold air intake. Slaped the cold air tube and said to put the stock one back on and bring it back. Total Bull Shit!!!!

I live in the tax-fucked area of San Mateo county CA, DMV fees increased from $14 to $24 last year. I gotta SMOG everything from my pile of shit 20 MPG daily driver XJ to my rock crawler to my 2006 CTD.
I wish I could find a job far away from this place.

Look up the manufacturers website. They may have an Executive Order Number available to make it exempt.
Most cold air intakes do.

Yes... it's called an C.A.R.B - E.O. (Executive Order) number. You can find out by either looking up the Intake Filter model and calling AFE, or look it up under C.A.R.B's website. (CALIFORNIA AIR RESOURCES BOARD) My smog Guy had a book with all approved aftermarket E.O. #'s ... about the size of a Yellow Page phone book.
I have an AIRAID Cold intake sytem on my 05 Dodge CTD. E.O.Sticker long gone but was able to find it in his book. Good luck...

Been trying to buy a used F450 for work and have been running into what is referred to as a VIN STOP, cant be sold in CA without retrofitting a PM trap. Dealers are getting screwed on this and if you buy from a private party and the truck is 14k GVW or higher you could get stuck with the cost of a retro fit or not be able to register the vehicle in CA.
