Yup.

Toyota needs to put the Tundra rear end (and a freakin' 8" or bigger solid front axle!!!) under every body-on-frame 4x4 they make or this unwarranted breakage will just continue to erode their reputation for off-road capability and overall reliability.

The wimpy front and rear ends are THE reason why I don't own an FJ Cruiser.

Ya, what were you thinking? It's not like it's a toyota or something. Get an 85 4runner if you want to wheel or a 1999 or 2000 4runner with the rear locker.

What'd you think would happen when the side curtain air bags deployed and wedged you between two parked lincoln masturbators and you just kept driving while you were bound up like that?

I mean only jeeps are trail rated ....right.

Oh what a feeling.......and the worst is these are jap toyotas, not US, so what's the excuse?

I think I'll wait for the 2009s, maybe the A-Trac will cease to be more accurately called A(uto destruct)-Trac.

They better warranty the fucker.

After 9 years, 225:1 with 38.5 sx I've never roasted an r/p never broke a detroit in either end and have a pile of birfields from Marlin's first, to d44 moser cromo shafts for tent stakes, this includes three years of comps on the same shit too. THAT is what Toyota used to mean.

I don't need to search, I know all about it. The half dozen people I've spoken to in person and my self didn't do the A-Trac hack. I didn't have A-Trac on when mine blew. The problem seems to be with build dates from 08/06 and prior. The rumor is that the R&P gears were heat treated to be harder early on so that they would have a longer life, but wound up being too brittle.

So, do you know of any instances where A-Trac broke something? I'm only asking why you call it auto-destruct-trac because I've never heard anyone blaming A-Trac for breaking the R&P. Most people I've talked to only had the locker on or neither. I'm not looking for a fucking argument, I just thought you might know something.

yes this was caused by the A-TRAC...... but no locker...... I have not done the hack just yet and never will now...... the locker came in after atrac didn't help...... when that didn't help i just used more throttle to get off the trail that I was on..... the sound was just horrible...... got a second dealer opinion and now I have to fax in all reciepts for reimbursement review... 4 to 6 weeks for review on that!!! Fawkers.... just in time for the holidays!!!!!!!! but I should at least get my money back to regear the front now!!

So did you have A-TRAC or the locker on when it blew? Also, what's the build date?

Toyota made a big mistake putting the Toy 8" rear end, originally designed for the early mini trucks under the FJ with a big v6, 240 hp, and a MUCH heavier vehicle w/ a rear locker.

Why they didnt use the 9.5 diff found under FJ80s is beyond me. Toyota has been cutting way too many corners with their 4x4s these days.

Locker or A-ATRAC, doesn't matter. The ring is weak, period. The build date info is right. The supplier didn't cryo the ring and when you drive in 4-lo anytome on loose gravel, you run the risk of blowing the rear. I've seen it happen 5 or 6 times.

ATRAC and the locker only increase the rate of blowing it up because you only use them when you need them...and in the areas that could blow your rear.

I've seen 3 fronts blow too, similar issue, but not documented like the rear.

All were covered under warranty or the owners sued to have them covered because it is a known defect.

You dug up a 4-month-old post just to say that? You're either dumb or stupid.
