When I was still IFS with steel wheels, 33" MTR's, 3" lift and some armor and a roof rack w/lights I was getting about 15mpg average per tank. That was about a 50/50 mix of city/highway driving. Stock I was getting 18mpg average driving the same route. The 19 gallon tank on the FJC is really small and limits distance. An AUX tank is on my list of projects, but way down at the bottom at this point.

Last time few times I checked I got 19 or 20 mpg running 33s with a 3" lift. The majority of it was on the highway.

Clearly your priorities aren't straight.

They are completely different beasts. It's odd to see a purchase comparison between those two vehicles.

Screw it. You should buy BOTH of them.

neither, i like both the dodge quad cabs and the fj cruiser, but if the cruiser suffers from shitty mileage, id rather have the dodge and the extra space it provides...it could actually double as a tow rig infrequently for moab and the hammers, but my wheeling rig is completely streetable so im not needing a rig designated as a 'tow rig'

I have a bit of experience driving FJ's... about 80k worth.

Stock, 4.0 auto, no trailer, I get between 18.5 and 22 on the highway.
Same truck with a 5,000lb trailer and the MPG dumps to 15 mpg.

4.0 auto, 2" revtek lift, ARB bumper, 285 BFG AT's and I get 17.
I would post what I get with a lifted truck towing a 5k trailer, but its way shitty.

Just as a reference, with the same driving style, I would get 18-19 with a stock 98 3.4l auto 4runner, or 17-19.5 with a 4.7l auto '07 4runner.

Go buy one then! Wierd comparison anyway...

BTW, I loved my F250 Powerstroke diesel - but in no way would place it in the same use category as my FJ. From other forums, mileage is a mixed bag with mods - I don't know any rig that you can modify drastically w/ big meats, heavy bumpers, etc., and expect to get Prius-like mpg. If you truly are concerned about mpg, stay stock and/or buy something you can live with. But, maybe I'm wrong... Anybody getting 20+ mpg on a seriously modified offroad rig?

My 93 std cab pickup on 37" MTR's regularly gets 21+mpg on the freeway, mixed dd drops it down to roughly 18... of course it's squirrel powered so that helps!

I really don't know why, but the FJC mpg does suck. Max i got stock was 18 mpg. Modified (admittedly heavily, but only with 33" BFG AT's on), I get as low as 11-14 mpg (depending on mean freeway speeds).

put it this way:

If you care about gas mileage, don't get the FJ.

I get about 14-15mpg on my stickshift going speedlimit on 50/50 city and HW, but on an automatic should get at least 19-21mpg. You can get one of those power tuners to get a few more mpg's, but they really aren't worth it because first they f*ck up your warranty and second they don't dogive you enough mpg's to actually save $$$$. So bottom line is DON'T buy an FJ if you want MPG'S.

....and if you want a fuel effiecient car that can go off road you can try and build a Prius with dana 60s fr & rr and 37" tires

Get the Dodge; hard to fit your Hypermotard in an FJ! I almost bought a Hyper S - things are awesome!

If you want MPG then get the auto. The manuals are full time AWD and they have taller 3.90 gears. I get about 15 in mixed driving, 16 if I keep to the highway.

I have an FJ with 33's super charged, front and rear bumpers. I get about 13-14 average and 15-18 highway driving between 65-80mph.

I also have a 06 Super Duty that gets about 13-14 average and can get up too 16mph. When I use to tow my rig I would get 10-12mpg with about 8k worth of load behind it.
BTW the super duty is for sale.
