Formula 4?....... jus get'n started
Howdy!
Been lurk'n for a bit, try'n to decide what to with a rust bucket '79 LWB..... Formula 4 sounds like to a very do'able option for it as a family wheel'n rig. I haven't found any pics of F4 rigs finished...... Anyone wanna share? Also try'n to get an idea on costs for the project (chassis, skins, frame mods, etc.) Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks, Mike

the reason you can't find any Formula 4 pic's is because there is only one that is even close to wheeling and I don't think it is completely done yet. for chassis information go to www.hendrixmotorsports.com If you already have a donor truck you need to plan on spending $10,000 to get started. This is just for parts. If you need some of it built for you it will cost more. John

I don't think that's an accurate statement. I know, I know you guys are building one to raffle off and I'm sure that it the best there is BUT that doesn't mean he can't build one for a lot less. I don't think it's good to discourage anyone from building, do you?

DToy isn't saying that the raffle truck has $10k in parts in it, it's a LOT more than that, he's saying that realistically it will cost $10k to build a basic F-Toy. I KNOW this is accurate because I personally know some people that have built them and that's the average cost. |

10k probably isn't unrealistic. I'm sure I've got more then that in my FJ40. That doesn't really discourage me. More like it encourages me to see how much under that I can stay.
desertoy - Thanks for the info. I'd sure like to see one of the F4's with the seats mounted. I'm 6'2" and leg room is important

I'm also considering building an F4 for two reasons. First off, I'm tall like you, 6' 3" and secondly I'd like the added room to stow gear like coolers and other camping stuff. I want to use it as a trail-rig, so that extra room will help out on those 1 week trips on the Rubicon. |

That sounds like a accurate amount of money to build a functional rig. But how about giving the guy a parts break down of your estimate. He is probably thinking that he has a drivable complete rig and only has to spend 1400 on a chassis do a little welding and he's good to go. Maybe a breakdown would give him a better understanding.

You guys are all big boys, call Marlin Crawler or Trail Gear and get prices on that stuff. I have a price breakdown for all of the fabricated parts like spring mounts, x-members, floor, fire wall, etc.
E-mail me and I will send you a price list

Hey man, I see you are from KS. I would like to come by and take a look at a formula rig being built in person. Not sure where you are but I am in Derby. I am also wanting to build a formula 4 seater. I will build one someday but will have to use my stock 4 runner rear seat cause I gotta have room for 5 people. Let me know when you get your chassis and get started, if you dont mind, I will stop in one day and take a gander. Aaron

Build up cost and Formula Four pics.
Me and my brothers have both finished our formula fours (#F012 & #F013 if you send me a reply with your email i will send you pics. or if i remember i will post some later. if your lookin to do a cheap build up it shouldnt cost you 10K in parts like i read earlier in the post both of our rigs have dual cases and gears and work amazing and we only have about 13K put in to building both of them and thats including the price of the donor trucks too. send me an email address and i will send you pics.

heres mine with out the 2nd set of seats
its the formula 4 chassie but instead of putting seats i made a platform for a tool box. i am selling it for $8,000.00 if you are interested. its a great buy. i do know for a fact it is very expensive to build one. it's alot more than i planed. i have about $12,000-$15,000 in mine.
