X-Chassis #32
I just purchased X-chassis # 32 from Mike at Hendrix. It's being ordered with no internal tubing. I want the dovetailed Buggy look in the rear. Im going to weld it too a full size frame. Im sure Im going to get lots of crap about it from people asking why this or why that. It's what I want, what I can afford and what I have to work with. Im looking forward to the long hours.
My Donor is my 76 gmc 3/4 ton pickup. It has a 500hp 468 complete crower roller assembly 6200 rpm max power range, th400 with 2800 stall converter, np 205. Front 44 flat knuckle with rear 14 bolt detroit locked. 4.11's. Im going to reuse my rear leafs on the front since they are a softply in the rear they should have good flexability with the heavy big block above it until I have more money to 3 link the front. The rearend of my truck is about 40 % complete in a 4 link project and I have 90% of the hardware needed to complete. I got most of it from John Currie. I used to work there and now i contract with them so hes become a friend now instead of just a boss, his entire family is awesome. Hardware are tabs for axles, HD TJ 4" rear coils and upper and lower buckets and 2.5 johnny joint with 1 1/4 welded stud. BTF bungs and ORD traction bar plates. My application is going to be mainly sand with a little dezert. Im planning on a 112-115 wheelbase. Because of the 4 link in the rear I can cut off as much frame as I need to make the x-chassis fit. Im going to try and make it a 5 seater. i have 3 kids to twin daughters and finally my boy. Cant forget the wife she is funding this operation. Going to run 49 in front bench and 36 rear. If you guys have time post your build links and comments. Im sure I read most of them, but can use the ideas or refreshers. Last edited by gm500hprat; 09-17-2006 at 05:36 PM. |

Little confused here. If you got an X-Chassis, why are you talking about cutting frame? Or did you get an F-Toy cage to put on the gmc frame?

I got x-chassis #32. Its not a formula chassis. I ordered it without the internal floor structure because I want a narrow rearend. Not the square rearend that the formula toys have. I really like the buggy rearend. But want to reuse my frame because I have a big heavy iron Big Block, and I dont want to make mounts for it or fab up special steering or use hydraulic steering.
It will resemble the formula toy in the sense that its getting welded to the frame. But its an x-chassis serial number not a formula toy. The front end will look like a formula the rearend will look like a buggy. Last edited by gm500hprat; 09-17-2006 at 05:37 PM. |

Thanks, It will be a 6-8 week build time. So it will be a while before I get it but with this heat it can take all the time it needs to be built. Try and visualize a formula toy bare chassis but with the rear end of an x-chassis.
I originally called and asked Mike if he would modify a formula chassis to be dovetailed in the rear like the x-chassis was, and he said that he doesnt modify the chassis. He's probably got a jig set-up for each chassis and just bangs those bends out. But he said that I can order an x-chassis with no internal floor structure instead. So by all means it will look just like a formula toy. except it will be shorter 145" instead of 154 or 152, narrower in the front and rear. and the rear will be completely tube with the chevy frame cut off. I guess it would look somewhat like the guys that did it to an early bronco frame. |
