Thumbs up Formula #504

Well -

I might as well start the thread now.

We've had the F-toy chassis for over a year now. We were one of the original orders from Whaley Enterprises on the East Coast. Primed it and it sat outside for that long. Good thing we used good primer.

Anyway, the frame finally went on my 84 so it's time to get this thing moving.

I took vacation on every Monday from mid September through mid November in order to work 3-day weekends on this thing.

Frame: 1992 X-cab frame
Front Axle: 85 Solid axle, 4.56 gears, Aussie Locker
Rear Axle: 86 Rear axle, 4.56 gears, Detroit Locker
Trans: W56 5spd
X-fer Case: Dual cases w/stock gears

I will update the pictures here w/any changes. http://members17.clubphoto.com/jonat...10/guest.phtml

I also have a 92 4Runner to cannibalize for parts.

Willbeis and I will be doing all the fab work ourselves and YES we'll be upgrading parts from the current truck as we go.

I look forward to the input along the way.

Thanks man. It feels good to get back to building.
We're picking up the consumables for the plasma tomorrow and we'll start cutting everything off off the frame.

Feel free to stop by any time!

You noticed the trailer - not bad for a bunch of amatures huh?

Cool! Good to see another one getting built. Are you planning to compete?

I'm building it to specs in hope that we can get some more interest to compete here on the East Coast. Currently, even if I build it to specs, I'll have nobody on the East Coast to compete against.

IFS BS and everything else on the frame that wasn't needed is gone -

Engine Mounts Fabbed up -

Engine in -

The engine now sits 3" lower on the frame and 4.5" back from stock

We'll be pulling the 5spd trans and dual cases out of the animal and start making up the mounts.

Well, it's not super exciting but it's an update. Every hour here and there counts.

Spent some time today getting the trans and T-cases mounted up to the engine to take some measurements.

While it was in the air instead of one the ground, I decided to take a few hours to clean the last 5years of leaking gear oil off of the t-cases and trans. I never realized that much crap could build up!

Purty!

Just an idea of where it sits in the frame.

We're thinking of holding up the tail of the cases will be held up with this:

We'll also have an intermediate Trail-Gear mount that captures both transfercase mounts.

That's it for now!

Undoing some of what we've done.

We're not real happy with how low the trans and t-cases sit in the frame.

We're going to redo the engine mounts and get them up a bit more.

In the meantime, we'll be pulling the axles out of the animal.

We hang below the frame a little too much with the current configuration.

The engine will still sit roughly at IFS stock.

The difference is in the IFS frames vs. the SA frames.

You can just see the lowest part of the T-case under the seat on this one.

That's flat:

The crossmember mounting is very similar to mine, except mine is booty fab. Looks good. I hope to get the TG Ftoy to the East Coast next summer. We will have to plan an event.

Matt -

The flat-belly above is not mine. I've been scrounging pics to get an idea of how flat most are running.

The problem that we run into is that we're using an IFS frame which does not "tuck" the same was as the SA frames. Therefore, if we keep the mount as high as stock, we'll be 3" below the framerail at the bottom of the t-case. I'm just going to have to deal with that.

The arch from the main frame to the engine mount is larger/higher on the SA frame and then drops down fwd of the arch.

The IFS frame arches slightly and then evans out in the front.

Contact Hobie, his frame is from an IFS. I am pretty sure he is flat belly too.

Mine is not completely flat, it hangs down about 1 inch. I will be in the shop later today so I will take some photos and also measure the actual dimension.

Thanks Matt.

The new motor mounts will be made from 3x2 x 1/8" tube. we'll cut an inch out of the 3 to overlap the top of the frame and run down the inside of the frame with the left over 2". They will will be stock (ifs) height but 4.5" back from stock. The center hole on the motor mounts need to be 19" across center to center. The frame rise is 8 degrees where our mounts will be and the mount face is 55 degrees.

Hopefully I can have this knocked out tomorrow and get the engine, trans and transmission back in for measuring. THEN... I'll give you guys at trail-gear a call for the bulk of what I'll need to get everything up out of the way and get the axles underneath.

Now that Hobie is running the TG 5" front springs he does not have a clearance problem with his frame and the drag link.

if you run soft enough springs, at full flex it will scrape the frame. i am running the full pack on my new 5"TG springs so i can go thru the woops faster. but if i were to take some leaves out, the drag link would scrape the frame at fully flexed. check out this pic before i notched it. you can see its resting on the frame.

The engine mounts seem to be the biggest hassle at this point.

Since we're using the IFS frame, we need to keep the height near stock.

The center to center on the engine mounts is 19"

In order to keep the 55 degree face and make the 19" center face to center face of the mount, there has to be a minimum of 2" on the inside of each frame rail.

To do this, we are looking at using 35 degrees for the face and 20 degrees for the frame. This will give us a 55 degree face overall with "scrounge" room for the 19" center face to center face of the engine mount.

Incorporating that with the 10 degree slope in the frame has kept things interesting. We should be done with the mounts tomorrow.

Also pulling the axle/springs from the Animal and rolling them under the frame.

We're removing a leaf from the Allpro 5.5" springs

Ride height at frame bottom/center is predicted to be 23.5 inches

Any and all input is appreciated.

We needed to get a good mock-up of how everything was going to sit with the engine, trans, t-cases, axles and chassis so we set off to do it.

Nothing has been hard-mounted other then then engine and trans.

All input from those who have built, is much appreciated.
