OK, here it goes.
I purchased a chassis a few months back and have been collecting parts ever since. I was originally going to build a single seater, rear engine, diesel buggy, but was talked out of it by Brian at Front Range. One time of driving his f-toy, and I had to have one.
I have been working on the squirrel (as it will now be called) for the past few months and have most everything I need to finish it. I am planning on competing in the west coast W.E.Rock series in 2009, so it will be built to spec.
I will try to keep it updated regularly, but things happen, and there aren't enough hours in a day.
For cleaning off an entire frame, a plasma cutter is the only way to go!!! This is also the time when it's a good idea to have a couple of cases of beer, the grill cooking, and call up a bunch of friends to help grind and flap-wheel all the boogers off!!
Are you near the "real" BFE?
Are you going to weld/fill the frame holes?
Are you also in the "keeping the Runner and building an FToy" club?
I have been using the plas to remove the brackets and other unwanted stuff. Much easier than a cutoff wheel or even the torch.
I am about 5 hours from BFE (NW COLO).
I had thought about filling all the holes in the frame, but I'm not sure. I like the look of a smooth frame, but I see everyone putting "go fast holes" in everything, i'm thinking I will keep the factory "go fast holes". Actually, I'm kinda lazy, and I REALLY hate grinding, so I don't know if I'm going to give myself something else to do.
As for the 4-runner; my wifes rig, and she doesn't take well to me parting her stuff out to build mine. I stole the 36's off it, and the drop draglink from it a few weeks back so I could take my flatty to Phoenix, and haven't heard the end of it yet.:shaking:
I'm keeping both my flatty and the wifes Runner together, and building the ftoy stand-alone. I am building it mostly for comp, but don't want to steal parts from the other rigs.
Got the frame all cleaned up. Lots of grinding and welding, but its done.
I shortened the frame to the chassis length and added a rear x-member. Also finished the rear spring hangers and shackle mounts. Since I am running 4" wrangler springs, I had to move the shackles mounts forward. I was going to mount them on the rear of the frame, but with the spring length, I had to move them under instead.
installed some steering box reinforcement, and mounted the box to see if it clears the springs. Also mounted up the tires to make sure they clear chassis. Plenty of room on both ends, even when the chassis is moved down 1.5" to its intended position.
Soon to be assembling the engine, tranny, duals so I can get the mounts fabbed up. Then I can get to the stuff that makes it look like your actually doing something.
Finally started on the ftoy again. Been building a new cage for the daily wheeler and cross-over on the runner, so it's been on the back-burner for a few weeks.
Dual cases and carbed engine mounted in the frame.
Set the chassis on the frame. Mounted the bottom of the chassis even with top of frame rail. This gives me about 4.5" between helmet and chassis with the new seats.
Working on the floor and seat mounting. My wife is about 8" shorter than I am, so I need to figure out how to move the driver seat forward so she can drive it too.
The fronts are PRP Premier High Backs from Brett.
The rears are Beard Super Kid seats that I picked up from a local wheeler. Other than the logo on the front, they look identical to the PRP's, just smaller. They will work for my son for a while, then I will have to put a bench in the rear.
He is only 3, so the buckets will work for a few years. Not sure what the width on the smaller bench seat is, so I don't know if it will fit between the bends on the rear seat bar. I know the buckets sitting side by side has a gap between them about 6-8".
So I tried to find something that was subtle, but with a little character.
