Ftoy baja style?
Got turned on to the FTOY recently & find it very interesting. Currently 4wheel with an OME suspended 98 XJ. Like the idea of the FTOY for arizona fun. Wondering if anyone has thoughts on the FTOY for desert-baja style racing, like SCORE or BITD. Seems like a low budget way to get into the sport. Wonder what class that would fit in if any. Maybe a start to a new class like JEEP SPEED did?

BITD already set up the Ultra4 class; it's unlikely that another 4wd class would open up anytime real soon.
How about an XJ drivetrain in an X-chassis? If you put that XJ running gear in a buggy, it would be pretty competitive (although a lot of the Ultra4's are running LS-engines, D60's, bypass shocks, and 39-42" tires) X-chassis is similar in layout and construction to the FToy, but has a subframe and is set up for links. FToy chassis' are designed to attach to a stock Toy minitruck frame with leafs.

Thats what I thought about the FTOY, cheap start with an early TOY 4x4, basic fab skills, tune suspension for desert runnin vs crawlin, slap on the Hendrix cage- bingo.... your hangin out with IVAN & the big boys in Ensanada. Well I know it's really not that easy but the concept???

I have raced the last 3 King of the Hammers in the Marlin Crawler Formula Toy and it did real well. I think it would be a blast in desert racing, especially if you could up the horse power a little. to compete in the formula Toy Rock Crawling you have to use a 22r (or RE) motor. But if you weren't interested in making it legal for cone dodging, I would put a turbo charged 3RZ in it. That, a set of bypass shocks and dropping down to a 35" tire and it would haul ass across the desert.

Ftoy could race U4 as long as it passed tech. The Ftoy has proven reliable at the last three koh races so I think long distant desert races would be the best bet for a win.

WOW! I didn't the think the Marlin pilot himself would jump on this that quick. I have been lurking on here for awhile studying all the FTOY builds & write ups and just joined this AM. Been thinkin this desert racing thing for some time when I found you FTOY guys have some great ideas. I thought there's no way my budget would let me do anything but go and be a spectator, but you guys may just present some options. I wonder if an FTOY would fit in a class in one of the closer to home 250-500 mile BITD races.
I posted before you gave me the answer to my question....U4 Last edited by mc2az; 11-25-2009 at 02:11 PM. |

For Baja style, what about an F-Toy that runs a long travel IFS instead of a SFA?

IMO, the light weight of the F-Toy chassis, especially with the drive train moved back 8", would help the IFS survive.
