Bead Locks - has anyone been cited for driving on the road in California?
I am considering some Allied Racing Bead Locks for my FJ40 and of course they are not DOT approved. I was wondering if anyone had been cited in California.

Been driving mine with 14" of 42" irok sticking out with racelines. Nothing yet but I just got a trailer so I'm safe now. Had chips pacing me before w/o any issues. However if they decide to poncho you'll prolly get towed

No way.
I'm a cop and I run them. Rig only sees street use around Bountiful (RARE) and from my parents place in Moab to the trail. I'm shocked.

I'm also an LEO; citing you for that would be ridiculous to say the least. But......you may run across someone with a hard on for them. Bottom line IMHO: I've got other things to worry about and beadlocks are not one of them.
I've run a set of Allied 17's for 8 years now without every getting stopped for that. |

I think the general rule with police officers is not to call attention to yourself. I ran beadlocks on my 60 and never had a problem. Even had a few walk right up and ask about the cruiser. I was always polite and respectful and so where they.

I know I know. I have a lot of respect for Utah but I have got hassled more in Utah than anywhere else. I get around and Utah is where the police have messed with me.

Well, I apologize on there behalf. Apparently there really are LE officers with nothing better to do. Then again, I have received an "altered suspension" ticket.

Could you explain the specifics of the altered suspension law?

I doubt that you will any issues with smokey.....
the only thing to even be remotely concerned with, is that you risk the possibility that if you ever get in a nasty, high$ accident, weather it has anything to do with the wheels or not, you give an asshole ins adjuster a reason to deny coverage OR appoint blame! because of a non-DOT approved modification. small companies look for reasons to deny... BTW.... I have seen people come up with cool little stickers that read "simulated bead lock DOT approved"

Wyoming is the last cool place in the lower 48, no ride inspection if it moves its good, Kinda nice that it's like that here in Uinta County we have tons of dirt road & trails in the Uinta mountians, last weekend saw a group out cruising the back country in Jeeps.

Research of the vehicle code has proven that in CA, beadlocks are not illegal. What is illegal is for auto sellers and resellers to sell a vehicle that does not have DOT approved wheels. Don't have the code number handy. Like the tire outside wheel well issue, there is no law for or against beadlocks. The wheel well issue is a CHP internal memo and not an actual law.

I've never been stopped. But how would one tell if they were real and fake beadlocks?

yes please infrom us on the altered suspension law. I'm running 4 link mid link shock mounted style suspension front and rear, obviously not stock or anywhere close to it. Never asked about the suspension laws. As for bead locks no there are no laws saying you can't run them. They aren't DOT approved so the only thing is insurance liability issues in an accident. Same goes for full hydraulic steering. The cruiser I'm building will run bead locks and full hydro. I sat on the phone for hours talking to different chp officers and DOT in Washington with their engineers and it boils down to insurance liability in an accident. For full hydro you can even get around the DOT issue by using a street legal machine like a street legal crane. They run hydro steering. Only draw back is the system is HUGE. Way more than you need to run. Silly me I just assumed I'll be fine building my own suspension and not be hassled. I never even asked CHP about it. If you check out my build you'll see I'll probably be hassled a lot being on the street. lol
