Fine spline pinions are generally regarded as stronger. Toyota made them in '78 and in FJ62s. Aftermarket gears are all fine spline.

So where do you get the pinion flanges that correspond with the pinion if yours is older than '78?

Just about any Cruiser shop.... CCOT, Spectre, Man-A-Fre, Cruiser Outfitters...all of them should be able to hook you up...

Or you could get the mini truck flanges an re drill if needed. If I remember, a minitruck pattern is the same as the middle (medium) cruiser pattern. The splines are the same. The minitruck front tcase output has a larger flange and pattern that matches the FJ60 pattern.
