rockwell/humvee wheel backspacing ??

I stripped the drum brakes off of the rear rockwell and started looking at my width options. I have humvee wheels and the big 20"? wheels that came with the rockwell. I plan to run the big 6 lug centers from the 20s on the hummer wheels. From what I am seeing, if I run 'hubs in' and 4'' backspacing, I will be approx 87'' wide total. Hubs out would make that 97''.
I dont have the front axle yet so I dont know exactly how much backspacing I can use without hitting steering components or anything. I am thinking that I might run more backspacing in the rear wheels than the front just to help narrow it down some. II really dont care to shorten the axle any so my options seem slim

I was thinking of running about 6'' backspacing in the rear which should put total width around 83''. Any suggestions ?

Rusty, if you don't find your answers here quickly get a hold of Gunracer, Nolen can put you in contact with him, I spent some time talking Rockwells with him at ICBM and he is a wealth of knowledge on them, and even has a contact in DFW for getting laser cut centers to used in your Hummvee wheels, .

I called Gunracer the other day. He was very helpful. I am gonna cut the centers out of the rockwell wheels and use them in the hummer wheels. I will just rough cut them and fine tune the diameter on a lathe in the machinist class I am taking .
I guess what I am looking for is opinions on width. When does wide become too wide? I am gonna have to get a car hauler trailer for anything wider than about 82''. I will deal with that issue in time. Clayton will probably be where I wheel the most besides local runs.

Did you get into the "flipping" something on the Rockwells, to make them narrower he was talking about this, but since I know nothing about them I can't elaborate.
Edwin down in Austin has dual front RW in his now. I doubt he is online though I talked to him yesterday and he is thrashing to get ready for Calrocks..

Yeah Butch, he told me about flipping the hubs. I have been hearing the rockwell guys talk about hubs in or hubs out but didnt have a clue what they meant. The hubs can be removed, turned around backwards and put back on. Remove the lug studs and put them back in from the opposite direction. Reinstall the axle shafts and bolt them to the 8 threaded holes that are a perfect match as the original holes the axle was bolted to. By doing this ,the axle wms can be widened by about 10''. If you are interested or confused, I can snap a few pics and post em. Right now I am setting them up the narrow way, hubs in.

Rusty,

When I dropped off that rear axle, the hubs were already flipped in...but I am sure you know that.

Anyway, my rig is 85" wide to the outside of the 15" tires.

85-87" is not too wide for the trails we run.

Giddy up. No word yet on the front Rockwell.

i think the max back spacing on the hummer wheels with the hubs fliped in is 4" for 15" wheels and 4.5" for 16.5" but i am not 100% sure. check out www.usa6x6 and go to the forums section. i am sure it is there. they is some good hummer rim and 2.5 axle tech. and i am shooting for 93" outsisde to out side on my front axle and 87" on the rear. man i think i am going to love 44s.mike

Thanks guys. Gunracer, I assume the 4.5'' limit on backspacing only applies to the front axle ?
