Post Opinions...

If you were going to a coil suspension and running 36-37 inch Swampers on an FJ 40 with a 350, what axles and what tranny (possibly and auto)? Would the cruiser axles atnd up to a 350 with that size tires without popping birfields like we pop beers? I'm asking for a friend. Does anyone have an FJ45 cab for sale or an Fj 40 body?

Cool

I'm your friend Ken If I was building a 40 to be like, let's say the Grape Nuts Jeep, I would run a 60 in the frt. & either a 60 or 14 bolt in the rear. Forget running birfs with that size of tire. I would also probably run a built 350 trans with a 205 or Atlas T/C. You might want a 465/205 or Atlas. Depending on your wheelbase, you might run a 205/203 doubler.
As for the 40 tub, where were ya 3 months ago? I finally gave mine away.

Would you run full width 60s? Also what about overall length of the vehicle?

I don't know if I would run the axles full width or not. Depends on what you have planned for it. ie,are you gonna drive it on the street & have it licensed? Or, is it gonna be for just rockcrawling the ARCA events? Are you going full on buggie or what?
As for the axles, Frt. 60's came in some Chevy 1 tons,14 bolts came in alot of Chevy 3/4 & 1 tons.Dana 60 rears came in some Chevy 1 tons, ford & dodge trucks. I would have one built at one of the many shops that do that stuff. The 350 auto with 205 is hard to find, but adaptors are available. The 465/205 came in Chevy p/u's,blazers,subs,etc.

the first thing you should figure out is what type of wheeling you want to do and how much money you can afford to spend on the buildup. is it going to be street driven, even to and from the trail, or a trail only rig?
narrow down your ideas of what you want to use the rig for and i'm sure we'll all get back to you with some good pointers.
PS: autos rule!!!

Grape Nuts caliber without the width. Street legal would be nice but it probably won't happen under law enforcement scrutiny. I was thinking FJ45 cab with a flatbed arrangement or a buggy style rearend losing alot of sheetmetal in the process. After some reflection I'll probably do a manual tranny with a 350 for grunt. I am going to start gathering parts soon and we'll see how it goes.

Sloan, look at the "Moab pics" post in this section. His cruiser has a v8 with 465,60/14 bolt. Might be good to talk to him.
What is gonna happen to your 40 that you had at BigBear? A 45 cab with a flatbed would be cool. Keep me posted.
Did you like that 9 Coronas? LOL

I couldn't get the 9 Coronas pic to open. I guess I don't have the helper application for it. I am going to finish the 40 from Big Bear before I start on this. I am going into parts gathering mode. If you see anything I might need Brad let me know. I probably won't start on it before the first of the year when I get back from down under. I am going to go ahead and weld the rear on the 40, regear to 4.56 or 4.88 and throw an ARB in the front. I am going to Fat City next week tos ee the new cage and get some pics of it. I talked to them about doing a coil suspension on her and then the gears got ot turning. I am going to make sure it is a pre 73 so there are no smog snafus when I license it. Then the games will begin. I'll have pics next week of the rebirth of the 40. I'm thinking of repainting her I want to get rid of the flames on the hood and stick with the field drab.

Hey Ken,
Where did you get the pic of that 4-door 40? I have often thought of stretching mine out for more room for the 4 of us. Don't know if I would go 4-door, but that thing looks cool.
I will keep an eye out for parts for your "project"

www.kodiakcustomvehicles.com They are in the process of setting up a new website so it is pretty minimal for now. I had forgotten about these guys and then I saw thier website while doing a search for FJ 45 stuff. These guys build some sick FJ 45s. Yes I am planning on running down to the TLCA meeting today at 3:00. Are you coming up?
