Im curious...do FJ60 front axle still run with birfields?

Yup. Everything's the same as the FJ40 except for the longer driver's side inner axle and of course the axle housing too.

If I am to swap the FJ60 axles into the 40 - Will it be a bolt on or will there be mods that needs to be done to secure the axles?

Maybe do an archive search - the 60 axles into a 40 subject has come up several times recently.

i'm pretty sure that the fj60 frame is wider, therefor you'd have to outboard the springs on the fj40 or move the spring perches closer together on the fj60 axles. a buddy of mine is putting a set of 60 axles in a fj45 wagon right now and he had to outboard the springs.

Just out of curiosity why would you want to put fj60 axles on a 40.I dont see any advantages.

3 inches wider. The long side front inner shaft is the same as the mini truck long side, short side the same as 40/45/55.

Wider axles equals more stability and greater potential travel.

Given the choice?? D60's front and rear. However, initial cost will be quite a bit higher.

D44's, IMO, are not enough of an upgrade to make much difference.

FJ60 axles have the same birfield weakness as the minitrucks and 40 series trucks. The advantage is if you run with mostly minis-cruisers then you have greater change of available parts. The disadvantage is you may be breaking more often.

look at the size difference in the axle shafts too. The rear 60 axles are huge!! good luck breaking one of those

Do you mean the same as late model FJ40's that have disc brakes? Can you put 79-85 mini-truck birfields on FJ60 axles? Or are they already bigger than the early model 40's? <IMG SRC="smilies/confused.gif" border="0">

minitruck birfields are the same as 60 series birfields. Later 40 series birfields (79+) are also the same.

76-78 40 series birfields are another, slightly smaller size.

69-75 birfields are all the same, coarse spline outers, and quite weak.

68-earlier are their own animal completely and frankly should just be replaced with a newer axle entirely.

If I had to do it all over, I would rather have run a D44 in the front than tried all the "Birfield" fixes.

Although I don't have to worry about it any more <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> I think the U-joint is a better option than the Birfield.

Have you seen the D44 Ujoint that Jesse at High Angle has produced?
