Last try: NorCal Pig Run 2003

Went up with the family and some friends to Deer Valley this weekend, had a great time. Coming into the trail I ran into a guy named Dan from Reno, licence plate IRONPIG, driving a blue SOA FJ55. (It used to belong to the Homewood ski resort at Tahoe. The rear roof was caved in by snow so he cut it out to make it a soft-top rear roof.) We got to chatting and he said he'd heard something about a pig run. I told him I was one of the guys that put it on, and that there'd be another. Gave him my URL.

Josh Lacey (double eagle) was at Deer Valley, visiting from the neighboring FJ45 run, and we were talking about the Pig Run, and lack thereof. We were both at Rubithon this year, with 55s, and there were two other 55s at Rubithon too, but that doesn't really count as a pig run.

Would be good to get all the 55s up to Deer Valley this year, for what would be the Third Annual Pig Run.

Here are pics from last year's Pig Run at Deer Valley, October 12 - 13.

What do you say? Sometime in September? I know fc187 is still trying to get his pig together after the 2.5 ton conversion. I know a couple other 55s weren't ready in time for the 8/23 date, and bkcruiser was sick. Can I get a show of hands for who'd be up for a Deer Valley Pig Run, and your preferred dates? October is possible, but there's a chance of snow and it would be cold at night. Let's shoot for some time in September.

Hey BK, let me borrow one of your spare 55 hoods and I'll duck tape it to my 40

I'll hide in the herd and maybe nobody will notice.

Don, you're an honorary javelina.

How about 9/20 - 9/21?

I hear you smell like a pig so that should be good enough...

OK, so far it's:

morgan
RokHeep
bkcruiser
double eagle

Maybe also Clay "rhino" Davis and Daniel Rohweder from the fj55 list.

I'll start calling the guys that have done previous pig runs, see if I can get them interested.

From the 88 side it is driveable by car from hwy 88 to the Upper & Lower
Blue Lakes. From the 1st (northern) crossing of Deer Creek to the 2nd
(southern) crossing of Deer Creek little boulders (1' to 2' diameter)
appear in the road, and the road gets rougher. Careful driving will get you
to the 2nd river crossing - where we usually camp - with no problems. I
took my FZJ80 on 305/70R16 (approx 33"x12") on the trail last weekend with
no troubles, as did my friend Seth with his IMMACULATE blue/white FJ55 on
33x9.5 tires.

I have GPS waypoints for those of you that want them.

I will have a handful of Brian Koerner's "IRON PIG" stickers to give out to
all attendees, and I'll even bug a couple of my favorite vendors for a
raffle donation. I can't promise anything, but if I can rustle up some
goodies we can have a raffle.

Now which of you can make it?

Dispite my pig-like qualities I'm afraid I won't be able to make it on the 20-21st. Got to work that weekend
It's areal bummer too, cause Deer Valley is so close to home.

Morgan- My pig is in a general state of disrepair... There is just too much stuff I would have to do in order to get it ready- and not enough time to actually do it. Man- I would love to come. Deer Valley was awesome last October. It's kinda sad how the pig trip has just sort of disintegrated in the past couple of months.
Yeah. So that's pretty much it. My piggy is going to be sad when I tell it that it doesn't get to go play with the rest of the pigs....

C'mon gents and ladies! There has got to be more pigs out there that could make this. I did this trail last year in a stock rig. It's scenic and fun with great camping areas.

Calling FC187!!

I haven't heard back from fc187, but it'll be a small showing. I have called or emailed every person I know in NorCal with a 55, and/or who's made a pig run in the past, and almost everyone is either busy that weekend or their 55 is not ready. Haven't heard back from three guys.

My wife is thinking about coming. I'll bring one or both of my kids. If any of you are travelling family-style to the pig run, let me know! Kathy?

Now, who wants to come in the south (ruff) way and who wants to come in the north (mellow) way?

I would prefer the south way, personally. We'll meet at the northern crossing of Deer Creek for a photo op Sunday.

I'll camp just south of the southern crossing.

Here are some coordinates:

http://www.birfield.com/archives/htm.../msg00079.html

If any of you are thinking about maybe joining us, stop considering it and plan on it! Other cruisers welcome too.

Let's use channel 20 for Saturday and channel 21 for Sunday.

I will not be able to make it this year. Bill will be bringing the kids and his sister. She is an off road virgin doing a research paper for a college class on "counter cultures". I'm sure she will have a great time.

Hey Don, that's too bad! Next year. This year's 55 run will be a token run, as we're no where near our potential for attendees. Check this out:

http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/pigr...ners_2003.html

I sent out an email to those that are going, and those that are maybe going. If you didn't get it but you'd like to join us let me know.

Basically, let's meet at the big meadow by the northern crossing of Deer Creek at 10AM on Sunday for a photo op. I'm going in the south way. Who else is going in the south way Saturday morning? Want to sync up?

Other cruiser people, feel free to join us.

morgan,

I just picked up on this thread...I had totaly planned on shining up the 70 for this run but my out-laws showed up for a 2 week visit last week (arrrggghh!)...needless to say, I can't bail on them after they drove 3000 miles to get here. I guess I'll see you at the Rubicon clean-up

cheers,

B
